  1. Washington Area Humane Society Dogs

  2. Mojo Breed: Collie Mix Size: Medium Age: Adult Sex: Male Date: 1.07.07 Mojo has so much irrepressible energy, it is hard to believe he is a senior dog. He whirls and dances and doesn't stand still for a minute. If you have a leash, he is ready to go. Mojo does like to be handled, petted and he takes treats with glee. When introduced to some cats at the shelter, he barked with authority but never lunged nor skittered away from them, all the while wagging his tail with enthusiasm.

  3. Rosie Breed: Sheperd / Saint Bernard Mix Size: Large Age: Adult Sex: Female Date: 1.06.07 Rosie is an exuberant girl about 4-years old who smiles a lot . Rosie originally came in as a stray so her past is a mystery. She was adopted for several months and then returned for escaping her fenced yard numerous times. Rosie needs a regular routine that includes daily walks. Most often, boredom and a lack of activity are the most common reason for dogs to escape their yards. They do not want to be outside alone and Rosie is very social. She is housebroken, likes people of all ages and gets along with some dogs. Rosie does not seem to cotton to cats so we recommend a home without any cats.

  4. Parker Can we play? That is all Parker seems to want to do. He does not want to spend another minute in his cage. He will play with boy dogs or girl dogs, just as long as they are looking for a rowdy, romping good time. Parker has been grabbing at the leash a bit, but it is clearly frustration at not getting any exercise. This young, handsome, fit rottie-mix loves attention and could be a great companion for other playful dogs, active adults and older children. Breed: Rottweiler Mix Size: Medium Age: Young Sex: Male Date: 3.25.07

  5. Bogart Breed: Collie mix Size: Large Age: Adult Sex: Male Date: 5.11.07 They don't come much sweeter or happier than Bogart. This fluffy 5-year old stray found his way to our shelter and he is a great catch for any family, even those with small children. Bogart is a people-dog ... he likes to be handled, to go for walks and he is very relaxed despite being surrounded by so many noisy dogs. Bogart may need some help with a housebreaking routine, but since he already knows the basics, this boy will surely learn very quickly and be a champion companion animal.

  6. Sheba Breed: Rottweiler mix Size: Large Age: Adult Sex: Female Date: 3.25.07 Sheba sports one brown eye and another electric blue eye that can pierce your heart. She also has a winning smile and easy-going manner. Sheba gets a lot of hugs since she looks and acts like a big teddy bear. Having been brought in by our Humane Officer, Sheba is now waiting for someone who will make her their special companion for the rest of her life.

  7. Ripley Ripley is a very pretty, happy and downright adorable mutt. She recently had puppies and is working on getting her figure back! With a little exercise, she will be back to her trim shape in no time. Ripley has such a winning disposition, she would probably be a great companion for even small kids. Breed: Shepherd mix Size: Medium Age: Adult Sex: Female Date: 5.9.07

  8. Squishy has been adopted and returned several times for being a "handful" to her various owners. She has been dubbed an "escapee", "dog aggressive" and "hyper". She is an exuberant, curious girl, but she is at ease and often ambivalent about other dogs. If Squishy could only meet someone who wants to take long brisk walks; a person who wants to spend a little extra time teaching Squishy some new tricks, she would be a wholly different dog. Squishy is bright, and very responsive to treat training. She is housebroken and would be fine in a home with older children. This pretty girl with the sweet face and ready smile is a champion locked in a cage waiting for her chance to shine. Squishy Breed: Terrier mix Size: Medium Age: Adult Sex: Female Date: 9.30.07

  9. Pebbles was adopted from our shelter quite a while ago, but was surrendered to another shelter without explanation. This 2-year-old is very energetic and enjoys playing with other dogs her age. She is also attentive to people and likes to be handled. She seems to be good-natured enough for kids and she most likely will be fine with cats, too. PEBBLES Breed: Rottweiler-Hound mix Size: Medium Age: Adult Sex: Female

  10. Even though she was returned after being adopted several years ago, Sydney was still willing to smile for her old friends who were happy ... and sad to see her again. This sweet, bright, 5-year-old boxer mix has attended obedience class and was with other dogs (too many according to her owner) and children. Sydney Breed: Boxer mix Size: Medium Age: Adult Sex: Female Date: 8.25.07

  11. Breed: Lab Mix Size: Large Age: Young Sex: Male Date: 5.11.07 He is aptly named for his big blue eyes. Sinatra is only about 9 months old ... a very big baby. with all the energy expected of a Lab puppy. Sinatra's original owner surrendered him when he realized he did not have the time for a dog. He was adopted for a few weeks into another home with a dog who he roughed up and inadvertently injured. Sinatra is friendly, enthusiastic and very much a retriever. He is also strong and although he would love to have another boisterous playmate to play fetch with, it should be another equally active, strong dog. Sinatra

  12. Breed: Am-staff mix Size: Medium Age: Adult Sex: Female Date: 9.8.07 JADE Jade is a compact, medium size girl with a shiny black, very short coat. She has a winning smile so characteristic of this people-loving breed. Jade loves attention, is confidant and friendly and appears to be on the cusp of being housebroken.

  13. It's hard to hear that after 11 years with her owner Sheba was surrendered. Her owner said she could no longer care for the pretty dog. This huge change has rocked Sheba's world. She has grown used to shelter life now and once out of her kennel, Sheba is a curious, gentle girl who lets you stroke her soft coat and tickle her ears. Breed: Dalmatian Size: Medium Age: Senior Sex: Female Date: 4.01.07 Sheba Sadly, Sheba was returned once again to the shelter after an adoption of 3 months. Her owner reported that she was getting snappy towards the kids and guarding toys and food and thought that Sheba would be better placed in an adult only home.

  14. Sadie is an affectionate people-friendly girl who played and got along well with her male bulldog-mix (who also came from our shelter) roommate in her adopted home. When visiting another home, Sadie bit the neighbor's elderly dog and she was subsequently returned. Her owner's had no other previous incident, but they did not feel they could prevent a repeat occurrence. Sadie is still quite young and has not shown any aggression to people, but it may be best for Sadie to be the only dog in a home or, as before, with only one other male dog. Breed: Am-staff mix Size: Medium Age: Young Sex: Female Date: 12.16.07 Sadie

  15. Breed: Chocolate Labrador Retriever mix Size: Large Age: Adult Sex: Male Date: 7.8.07 Wilbert Wilbert is a very confident, take-charge dog who would be best suited as the only pet in a home. Wilbert turned up as a stray and has been respectful of the staff and volunteers, but clearly does not like such close confinement with so many other dogs. Can you blame him? Wilbert is happiest when he is taken out for walks where he can nose the ground and take the world in. He will sit for treats and make eye contact which bodes well for training sessions.

  16. Breed: Chow mix Size: Large Age: Adult Sex: Male Date: 9.8.07 It was quite a trick ...eluding those who must have owned him and finding his way into the shelter. Houdini may have been an escape artist like his name (given to him at the shelter) might suggest, but this stray will need help busting out of this place. The handsome chow mix with the lovable mug is recovering from some ugly fly bites on his ears, but otherwise he is in excellent shape and is a very pleasant chap. Houdini

  17. Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier Size: Large Age: Adult Sex: Female Date: 9.23.07 Envy Envy could easily be the envy of all the dogs inasmuch as she garners so much attention. This mesmerizing girl is the perfect blend of a beautiful and powerful dog. This pure-bred Am-staff came from a breeder with other dogs who were not cared for properly. Envy is the quintessential loving dog, drawn to all people with an eye to please and get affection in return. She does not seem aggressive to cats, but she might give chase and she is rather ambivalent about other dogs.

  18. Breed: Lab mix Size: Medium Age: Adult Sex: Male Date: 11.10.07 When they arrive as strays like this Casper has, it is a mystery what their life was like before the shelter. This sweet dog with the light-gray muzzle, who seems to be housebroken, is boisterous in his cage — OK ...noisy ... barking for attention, not happy about his confinement — and quixotically demure outside. Now, the gentle side of Casper is shining through on walks and one-on-ones with people of all ages. But oh how he loves to play! Recently a younger dog who had been adopted a few months ago came back for a visit and Casper really hit it off with her, romping and running in the playpens. Casper

  19. Breed: Sheperd Hound mix Size: Medium Age: Young Sex: Male Date: 11.18.07 Trouble Trouble must have lived up to his dubious name since the 8-month-old pup was deemed too rough by his owners and subsequently surrendered. Yet the cute boy was in a home with small children and would no doubt make another family a nice companion dog.

  20. Breed: Retriever mix Size: Medium Age: Adult Sex: Female Date: 11.18.07 Fluffy Fluffy has those glamorous good looks that are hard to resist. This 3-1/2 year old beauty was surrendered because the owners "could not keep her in the yard." Fluffy is housebroken, good with small children and likes dogs. She has a lot going for her, but what she really needs is an owner who will meet her exercise needs so that she is not so bored and as likely to want to escape.

  21. Breed: Boxer/Lab mix Size: Large Age: Young Sex: Female Date: 12.23.07 Staci left the shelter as a puppy and has been returned as a rambunctious, but good-natured teenager. Staci is very pretty and just loves to play. She is doing well despite being caged almost every minute of the day. At only about 8-months old, Staci is ripe for training and wants to learn. She is a little rough for real small children, but would be fine with older children. Staci

  22. It looks like another puppy who got to be too big for his owners to treat like a puppy. At only a year and a half old, Buddy is doing all that stuff that puppies do ...digging, jumping on people and being rambunctious. Not surprising for a dog who spends over 8 hours a day alone and in need of regular exercise. Buddy is friendly and trying hard to please. This handsome brindle is housebroken and energetic and likes some other dogs which means he might be a good "buddy" for another energetic friendly dog. Breed: Sheperd/Pit mix Size: Medium Age: Young Sex: Male Date: 11.10.07 Buddy

  23. Breed: Lab mix Size: Large Age: Adult Sex: Male Date: 11.26.07 He’s a powerhouse with a playful disposition. Even when Zeke managed to escape from his kennel inside, he just meandered around looking for some attention! This striking boy has attracted a lot of onlookers with his sleek muscled physique and engaging personality. Zeke is strong and needs a little training to walk properly, but he seems likely to be good around older kids. He would do best as the only dog in a home. Zeke

  24. Breed: Shepherd-collie mix Size: Extra Large Age: Senior Sex: Male Date: 10.27.07 Shadow seems so sad. The 7-year-old was surrendered by his owners who moved to a senior loving facility. Now Shadow hangs his giant head low and appears to be in a funk. He is very agreeable to volunteers and staff, dutifully walking nicely on lead, but it is pretty clear he would prefer to be some place else. Shadow is very calm with a nice disposition. He got along with outdoor cats and seems to be calm around most other dogs. Since Shadow was in a home with seniors, he no doubt would make seniors a nice companion. Shadow

  25. Breed: German Shepherd mix Size: Large Age: Adult Sex: Female Date: 10.11.07 Sierra is a beauty. The 5-year-old was surrendered by her owners who traveled alot and did not want to leave the sensitive Sierra alone so much as she was suffering from separation anxiety. Sierra would love to be "attached at the hip" to a new owner...someone she could spend plenty of time with. Sierra would make a great companion for a stay-at-home mom or a retired person. Sierra might also benefit from the company of another male dog in a home, but she does not do well with cats. Sierra

  26. Breed: Blue Heeler mix Size: Medium Age: Young Sex: Male Date: 12.23.07 Tac Tac is a beautiful, active 8-month old Blue Heeler mix originally adopted from our shelter and then returned. The diminutive boy is friendly with people and very playful. He would be great for a family with kids! Tac has one brown eye and one blue that accents his pretty markings. He is sure to melt your heart!

  27. Lab / Spaniel mix Size: Small Age: Young Sex: Male Date: 12.9.07 Chooco Chooco almost didn't make it. Brought in by our Humane Officer, Chooco had to be treated for Parvo which takes many young dogs out. He was lucky and is still regaining his strength. Chooco is a very gentle, sweet boy who would be a lovely addition to almost any family.

  28. Breed: Lab-/Chow mix Size: Medium Age: Young Adult Sex: Female Date: 12.10.06 She really is as soft as velvet, but she is also shy and a little timid. Velvet had been adopted for about 6 months and was recently returned. Her owner said that Velvet escaped sometimes and was afraid of people. Originally Velvet, who was a stray, would not come to the front of the cage to be leashed up for a walk, evidence of her shyness. She does need time to get to know new people, but Velvet is extremely gentle with people despite her timidity and she really likes other dogs. With regular exercise, exposure to people and other dogs, and a little targeted training, this pretty girl could improve in all of her weakest areas. But even as she is right now, Velvet is a really nice dog to hang around with and deserves a great home. Velvet

  29. Breed: Am-staff mix Size: Medium Age: Young Sex: Female Date: 12.23.07 Mae Poor Mae is desperate to get out of her prison. She's even torn up her lip on the sharp cage prongs. The pretty brindle pup came in as a stray and she uses her paws to reach for you; implore you to please take her out. She is extremely affectionate, gazing right into your eyes, pleading for some attention. Mae is about 9-months old and would love to have a home with some older children to play with and to get a nice long daily walk.

  30. Breed: Corgi Size: Medium Age: Adult Sex: Female Date: 11.26.07 Oh she is just such a cutie, this little corgi who was one of the 70 dogs brought to WAHS from the shelter seizure a month ago. Buckeye has made fast friends with staff and volunteers, charming her way outside by smiling and flirting at guests. It's a surprise this lively, bright girl has not already been adopted. But it is important to remember that Corgis are a herding breed and need some "work" to do to be happy and healthy in a home. Buckeye

  31. Chloe Chloe is as strong as a bull and could pull a tractor. Add to that the fact that she is stuck in a cage around the clock and she is one frustrated little girl. But Chloe has a very affectionate side like most dogs of her type. She loves to be petted and she will look you right in the eye for clues about what you want her to do next. This pretty brindle girl would love to be engaged with someone for training and treats. She is bright and attentive and would make a nice companion for someone who would spend the time to work with her. Breed: Am-staff mix Size: Medium Age: Adult Sex: Female Date: 12.01.07

  32. Breed: Lab mix Size: Medium Age: Young Sex: Male Date: 12.11.07 Booker Booker went out as a baby and has been returned as a strapping boy, but still a pup. This sleek, cute Lab mix has plenty of personality to share with people. He was having conflicts with the resident dog in the home he had like a typical teenager that he is. Booker is housebroken, knows some basic commands and would love to have regular walks and a bit of healthy play time. Booker would probably do well with another active female dog about the same age.

  33. Breed: Beagle-Lab mix Size: Medium Age: Young Adult Sex: Female Date: 12.16.07 Sheba was adopted a year-an-a-half ago when she was about 6 months old. Recently, her owner moved to where no dogs are permitted and Sheba (previously Sheila) was returned. The pretty 2-year-old at times looks confused and forlorn. She is very sweet, but terribly frustrated to be in a cage 24/7. She pulls when she first gets outside because she is so excited, but after a little while, she settles down and tries to walk nicely on leash. She is very interested in meeting the other dogs, too. Sheba is housebroken and would be great in a home with some enthusiastic kids who want to spend some time with this deserving, nice girl. Sheba ( Sheila formerly )
