  3. POLDIRAD’s features • Doppler velocity measurements: • convective structures in boundary layer, • multiple Doppler wind retrieval with other Doppler radar. • Polarimetric parameter measurements: • estimation of the rain drop size distribution (RDSD), • hydrometeor classification. Martin Hagen, 3rd COPS Workshop 10-11 April 2006

  4. POLDIRAD during COPS • All operation radars are Dopplerized. Only one polarimetric Doppler radar available in the COPS region (Montancy). • No Doppler radar in the Rhine valley. No radar coverage in the boundary layer. • POLDIRAD in the Strasbourg region. • Additional radars like NCAR’s S-POL and DOW’s (Doppler on wheels) are needed. Martin Hagen, 3rd COPS Workshop 10-11 April 2006

  5. POLDIRAD andMRR transect • Observation of the modification of the RDSD by orography. MRR_1 MRR_3 MRR_2 MRR_4 Martin Hagen, 3rd COPS Workshop 10-11 April 2006
