This project developed more accurate hydrology equations applicable across state borders for South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia. With the inclusion of additional monitoring stations, a segment of the Piedmont region in South Carolina, previously considered unique, was found to fall well within the range of the collected data. As a requirement, all hydraulic design studies related to bridge and culvert replacement in rural areas must now utilize these new equations. Hydraulic engineering manuals have been updated to reflect these changes, and a new resource link has been integrated into the SCDOT website for consultants’ reference.

RESULTS • MORE ACCURATE EQUATIONS WERE DEVELOPED • THE EQUATIONS ARE APPLICABLE ACROSS THE BORDERS FOR SC, NC, AND GA • WITH ADDITIONAL STATIONS, A PORTION OF THE PIEDMONT REGION IN SC THAT PREVIOUSLY APPEARED UNIQUE WAS FOUND TO BE WELL WITHIN THE SCATTER OF DATA FOR THE REGION
IMPLEMENTATION • ALL HYDRAULIC DESIGN STUDIES FOR BRIDGE AND CULVERT REPLACEMENT PROJECTS IN RURAL BASINS ARE REQUIRED TO USE THE EQUATIONS • HYDRAULIC ENGINEERING MANUALS WERE REVISED TO INCLUDE THE NEW EQUATIONS • A LINK WAS ADDED TO THE SCDOT INTERNET SITE FOR CONSULTANTS’ USE
