  1. International Arctic Systems for Observing the Atmosphere (IASOA) sandy.starkweather@noaa.gov April 7, 2014 NYSMAC

  2. IASOA Vision Bringing IASOA datasets and experts together in a sustainedscience collaboration to develop a pan-Arctic understanding of both how and why the Arctic is changing. “While many countries have their own capabilities, to provide a complete global data set, there is a need to develop an intelligently integrated and consistent system for observing, with transparency relative to aspects such as calibration, algorithms, and data utilization.” (NSF, GEO 2012) April 7, 2014 NYSMAC

  3. IASOA Integrates… Length Records reaching back 30+ years in some cases April 7, 2014 NYSMAC

  4. IASOA Integrates… Length Depth Records reaching back 30+ years in some cases 1000+ Datasets in Atmospheric Physics & Chemistry, Cryospheric, Ecological April 7, 2014 NYSMAC

  5. IASOA Integrates… Length Depth Breadth Records reaching back 30+ years in some cases 10 Locations: Coastal, Estuary Continental, Ice Sheet, High Elev. 1000+ Datasets in Atmospheric Physics & Chemistry, Cryospheric, Ecological April 7, 2014 NYSMAC

  6. IASOA Structure Important to emphasize that observatories are independently funded –

  7. IASOA Strategy IASOA’s role is to identify & develop targets for integration

  8. In 2013, IASOA developed a WG structure – Net Radiation Regional Prediction Black Carbon Clouds Methane, Trace Gases Atmosphere-Surface Coupling Image courtesy T. Utall

  9. IASOA WG Charge The mission of IASOA is to advance coordinated research objectives from independent pan-Arctic atmospheric observatories through: strategically developing comprehensive observational capacity, facilitating data access and usability through a single gateway, and mobilizing contributions to synergistic science and socially-relevant services derived from IASOA assets and expertise.

  10. Implementing this Charge Iterative cycle of expanding observations; improving data fitness; bringing together experts; motivating them with publications. What we’d like to do more: Work directly with information stakeholders. Net Radiation Black Carbon Identify datasets; error correction schemes; uncertainty estimates Improve Network Fitness Sharma et al. (2013); Key et al. (2013)

  11. Tour of the website: http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/psd/iasoa/

  12. Enhancing Ny-ÅlesundEngagement • Working group structure will expand • Experts for Surface-Atmosphere Coupling • Experts for Regional Prediction • Data Access Portal will grow in content, functionality and reach • POC(s) for Ny-Ålesunddatasets • Metadata profile & authoring capabilities exist • Archival Services available • LOCAL CHAMPION(S)
