Another Gravity Demonstration • Fluttering Fun • Mold a small amount of clay into ball and press onto table. • Place pencil into clay with eraser side up. • Predict where you think butterfly will balance. • Balance butterfly on top of eraser • Change the center of balance by attaching paper clips and/or washers in different areas. Experiment with different combinations and locations. What do you notice? • Turn the pencil point up. Now try to balance it with and without weights. What do you notice?

Activities Exploring Lift: • Chin-Ups • Predict what you think will happen when you place a strip of paper under chin and blow. • Now, do it! • Table Talk: Draw what happened and suggest a possible “Why” • Paper Tent and Straw • Fold a piece of paper in half. • Predict what will happen when you use a straw to blow underneath the paper. • Table talk: Draw and suggest a possible “why”

More Activities Exploring Lift: • Ball and Straw • Predict what you think will happen when you release a golf ball above a straw while blowing through the straw. • Hold straw with short end pointing up. • Hold golf ball above short end. Blow. Release golf ball. • Table Talk: What is happening? Why? • Ping Pong Ball and Funnel • Predict what you think will happen when you hold a ping pong ball in a funnel while the funnel is pointed downward, blowing through the funnel and then releasing the ball. • Try it! • Table Talk: What is happening? Why?

  12. Activities Exploring Thrust: • Balloon Jets • Measure out about 3 meters of fishing line. Thread piece of straw on line. Blow up a balloon but just pinch it shut (don’t tie it). Tape piece of straw lengthwise to balloon. Release balloon. • Predict what would happen with a larger or smaller balloon. • Table Talk: What is going on here? Why does balloon move forward from air coming out the back? • Moving Fan Demonstration • Predict what you think will happen when I turn this fan on. • Table Talk: What did happen? Why?

  13. Activities Exploring Drag: • Parachute Activity: Not going to do it, but I’ve included it in packet. • Flaps on a plane increase drag.
