  1. Meet the WatsonsActivity 2.17 • Before beginning the reading you need to complete the Quick-write from page 161. Choose one of the options and write with detail your memories about the experience.

  2. Chunk 1 • After reading Chunk 1 you need to describe the setting in the My Notes section on page 163. Try to use 3 – 7 words to describe the setting. Remember that setting includes both _________ and ___________.

  3. Chunk 2 • After completing the reading for Chunk 2, summarize Dad’s story about Moses Henderson in the My Notes section on page 164. (Do you remember the difference between a summary and a paraphrase?)

  4. Chunk 3 • In this section Mr. Watson comes up with a solution to the problem facing the family. In the My Notes section on page 165: • Write the problem and Dad’s solution. • Describe the family car. • Identify the chore that Dad gives to Byron and the narrator. • Make a prediction about how the work will progress.

  5. Chunk 4 • On page 166, summarize the first part of the prank the narrator calls “How to Survive a Blizzard, Part One.” • Highlight or underline the way the narrator handles the first part.

  6. Chunk 5 • Summarize the second part of “How to Survive a Blizzard, Part One.” • Highlight or underline the way the narrator handles the second part.

  7. Chunk 6 • On page 168 highlight or underline what the narrator promises himself. • What does this promise tell you about the narrator? What does it tell you about Byron? • Summarize the last part of “How to Survive a Blizzard, Part One.” • Highlight or underline the way the narrator handles the last part.

  8. Chunk 7 • On page 169 in My Notes section: • Describe how Byron sounds. • What is Byron’s problem? • The narrator’s name is finally revealed. Circle the name. • Sketch or describe Byron’s predicament. • Highlight what the narrator compares Byron to? Does that help you imagine the scene?

  9. Chunk 8 • On page 170 complete the following: • Whose reaction do you agree with and why? • Highlight or underline the solutions offered by Dad, Kenny, and Momma. • Can you think of any other solutions? • Write how you think Byron feels right now. What do you think of the way Dad is teasing him?

  10. Chunk 9 • On pages 172 – 173 Momma finally comes up with a solution. Underline that solution. • Underline the most vivid description in this chunk.
