  1. Linking Data to the NHDSupporting Informed Water Resources Decision Making 2009 NHD Stewardship Conference Denver, CO April 14-17, 2009 Tommy Dewald Ricardo Lopez-Torrijos

  2. Most enterprise data is stored in non-spatial enabled systems Non-spatial business systems: administrative, research, environmental enterprise-wide systems You need thematic maps showing the spatial relations Multi stake holder, watershed-wide management plans require a common architecture for coordination

  3. USEPA - Office of Water Promoting consistency -- through common data and tools -- to help enable national, cross-program analysis Common data NHD/NHDPlus Events (linkages to external water program databases) Common tools Reach indexing tools (desktop and Web-based) Analysis tools (map and forms based user interfaces, services) Custom analysis (direct connect, services and download)

  4. Goals Business Data Applications Technology USEPA IT Architecture Framework Strategic Architecture (Mission, Vision, Goals, Perf Measures) Federal Business Architecture (BRM, Cross Agency E-Gov, Pres Mngt Agenda) STAKEHOLDER SECURITY EPA Business Architecture (Processes, Functions) DOCUMENT MANAGEMENT GEOSPATIAL DATABASES Data Architecture (Data Entities, Data Classes, Data Flows) Applications Architecture (Applications, Interfaces, Information Flows) Technology Architecture (Locations, Networks, Infrastructure, Standards) Business Domains Environmental Info Research & Development Administrative Systems Enterprise Wide

  5. WATERS Geospatial Data Architecture WQSDB GRTS Water Quality Standards Nonpoint Source Grants National Hydrography Dataset Plus ATTAINS STORET Water Quality Assessments, Impaired Waters & Total Maximum Daily Loads Water Quality Monitoring (Watershed Assessment, Tracking & Environmental ResultS) (www.epa.gov/waters) Reach Address Database (RAD)

  6. Data Accessible Through WATERS • Water Quality Standards • Water Quality Stations • Assessed Waters • Impaired Waters • Nonpoint Source Projects • Beaches • Sewage No Discharge Zones • Nutrient Stations • Fish Consumption Advisories • National Estuary Programs • Permitted Dischargers • Drinking Water Intakes • Drinking Water Wells • Source Water Areas • Clean Watershed Needs • Special Appropriations Projects • State Revolving Fund Projects • Linked to the NHD • Not linked to the NHD

  7. RAD - Key Characteristics • Enables rapid cross program display and query • EPA enterprise data resource (direct connect and web services) • Water program databases remain unchanged (retain existing program ownership) • Care and feeding of NHD and events • NHD/NHDPlus refresh every 3 years to date • One comprehensive migration/synchronization of existing events to fit new NHD • During interim period, occasional indexing/re-indexing of events using latest source locations from specific program databases • Custom shapes where NHD does not exist 6

  9. Pesticide Risk Assessments The EPA Office of Pesticide Programs is exploring the use of the NHDPlus and value-added attributes in a variety of applications related to pesticide risk assessments. In this example, NHD navigation tools are combined with the NLCD and NHD catchments to estimate the direct and indirect effects of agricultural pesticide use on endangered aquatic species. (thawley.michelle@epa.gov)

  10. Assessing Recovery Potential of Impaired Waters • Recovery potential: the likelihood of an impaired water to re-attain Water Quality Standards, given its ecological capacity to regain lost functions, its exposure to stressors, and its social context. • Opportunity to consider landscape factors related to recovery potential within drainage areas and stream corridors, using GIS. (norton.douglas@epa.gov)

  11. Impaired Waters/FWS Refuges and Hatcheries Co-Occurrence Analysis, Two State Demo WA MI USEPA Assessment and Watershed Protection Division, Watershed Branch

  12. NHD Use in the US Forest Service • Survey Data • Fish Habitat • Stream Condition • Aquatic Biota • Analysis • Temperature Modeling • Fish Passage • Fish and other Aquatic Biota Distribution • Habitat Condition • Sediment Modeling
