Country spans across the eastern side of Europe and across northern Asia. • Historically, until 1917, political leaders were called “czars” (male monarchs) • Much of the turf is PERMAFROST…frozen ground, which makes it extremely difficult to plant crops and to build houses/buildings. • Siberia: the extreme eastern side of the country that experiences extremely cold temperatures for much of the year; was used as a lifetime sentence to punish those who opposed the government’s policies. • World Super Power since World War I; lost status after the end of the Cold War, but remain a major power in European and Asian affairs • Diet consists of: kasha (porridge); cheese, bread, coffee, hot soup, meat and potatoes, fish • Political History: communist dictatorship until the end of the Cold War; later became a democracy, but still heavily influenced by Communist past Basic Russian Facts
