  2. A set of principles that guides one’s behavior In academics these ‘principles’ are outlined by the Institutional Review Board (IRB)

  3. Types of Consent (you need BOTH types for ethical research) Informed Consent • Subjects need to be informed in advance include any potential risks and benefits • If there are NO risks (and is approved by IRB) no informed consent is required Continuous Consent • Subjects have to be able to back out of research at any time

  4. Confidentiality vs. Anonymity Confidentiality • Any responses/measurements of subjects must be kept separate from their personal information Anonymity - There will be no connection between answers of the respondents and their personal information for ANY reason

  5. Freedom Freedom from Deception • No deception unless it is the only method to conduct research • IF there is any deception there must be a debriefing Freedom from Harm • Subjects must not be physically or mentally harmed during research • If it is necessary to harm subjects they MUST be informed in advance. This includes “psychological harm” ex. Abortion

  6. Protected Groups Students, elderly, prisoners and college students (yes you) have special protection
