  2. THERE ARE 3 TYPES OF ROCKS

  3. Igneous Rock • You have already learned about Igneous Rocks • You know they are formed by melted rock that has cooled • Magma (lava once it reaches the surface) cools and creates Igneous Rocks • Examples of Igneous rocks are basalt, obsidian, granite, and carbonatite

  4. METAMORPHIC Rocks formed by heat and pressure. Examples: Marble, Hornfels, and gneiss

  5. METAMORPHIC • Take a very long time to form • Some have obvious layers and crystals

  6. SEDIMENTARY layers of sediment cemented and compacted together Caused by weathering and erosion Example: flint, chalk, and limestone
