  2. Alliteration • Repeating the first letter or sound in a group of words. • “Peter Piper Picked a Peck of Pickled Peppers.”

  3. Idiom • An expression or phrase that has a figurative meaning. • Hold your horses.

  4. How many literary elements can you find? A pelican uses its steam-shovel bill To gather more fish than can possibly fill Its pelican belly. It’s not out of greed… That bill is a trough where young pelicans feed. Rhyme scheme: AABCC Type of stanza: Cinquain (5 lines) Type of poem: Cinquain *Although this poem has 5 lines, it’s not a Limerick because of the incorrect rhyme scheme

  5. Text-Self • Connecting the character to yourself.

  6. Sestet • What is a six-line stanza called?

  7. Situational Irony • Something happens that we wouldn’t expect. • A fire station burns down

  8. What type of Stanza is this? • Spring is the season of growth. Summer is the season of warmth.Fall is the season of colors. Winter is the season of white. • Answer: Quatrain

  10. Author’s Purpose • To entertain. • To inform. • To instruct. • To persuade.

  11. Personification • What literary element is this? • The trees are crying out loud.

  12. Inferring • To use context clues to find the hidden meaning.

  15. Implicit • You need more information than what the book gives you.

  16. Antagonist • A major character who opposes the protagonist in a story or play.

  18. Couplet • A pair of rhyming lines in a poem often set off from the rest of the poem. Shakespeare’s sonnets all end in these.

  19. First Person Point of View • The point of view of writing which the narrator refers to himself as “I.”

  20. Stanza • A section of poetry separated from the sections before and after it; a verse “paragraph.”

  21. Cause & Effect • Cause – something that makes something else happen. • Effect – what happens as a result of the cause.

  22. Allusion • A reference to something, someone or an event. • For instance, if you were trying to instill confidence in a friend and said, “Use the force,” that would be a reference to Stars Wars.

  23. Climax • The point at which the action in a story or play reaches its peak.

  24. Conflict • Most important thing that happens in a story. Usually what makes the story exciting.

  25. Dramatic Irony • The reader knows something the characters do not. • In the movie, Home Alone, we know Kevin planted traps, but the thieves do not.

  26. Figurative Language • Language that does not mean exactly what it says. • Metaphors, similes onomatopoeia and personification all are examples.

  27. FAIRYTALE • This Folklore has the following elements • Royalty • Good/Bad Character • Usually starts out with Once upon a time • Magic

  39. LEGENDS • Some basis of fact • Explains reasons for natural occurrences

  40. Consonance • The repetition of consonant sounds two or more times in short succession in nearby words.

  41. Foreshadowing • A technique in which an author gives clues about something that will happen later in the story.

  42. Free Verse Poem • Poetry with no set rhythm or rhyme scheme.

  43. Genre • A kind of style usually art or literature. Some literary genres are mysteries, westerns, and romances.

  44. Hyperbole • A huge exaggeration. For example, “Dan’s the funniest guy on the planet!” or “That baseball card is worth a zillion dollars!”

  46. Imagery • The use of description that helps the reader imagine how something looks, sounds, feels, smells, or taste. Most of the time, it refers to appearance. For example, “The young bird’s white, feathered wings flutter as he made his way across the nighttime sky.”

  48. Flashback • A character goes back into a memory from the past.

  49. Irony • Language that conveys a certain ideas by saying just he opposite.

  50. Metaphor • A comparison that doesn’t use “like” or “as”— such as “He’s a rock” or “I am an island.”
