What are Run-on sentences?

A run-on sentence is a sentence in which two or more independent clauses are joined without proper punctuation.

  • They lack punctuations; they can be long, but they can also be short.

Example:

  • Long Sentence:

Even though Jenny always gives her parents an explication about her bad grades her parents never accept it they ground her by taking away her TV for a month but not even this stops her from playing video games and procrastinating from doing her accumulated school work.

  • Short Sentence:

I am supple I can put both my legs over my shoulders.

*Both of these sentences have no punctuation marks or separation. *

Types of Run-on sentences

Comma Splice: a run-on sentence that is joined by a comma without an accompanying coordinating conjunction.

Example:

  • The inexplicable phenomenon left scientists confuse, they worked hard to find the cause of it.

The correct form of this sentence would be:

The inexplicable phenomenon left the scientists confused, so they worked hard to find the cause of it.

The “so” unites these two sentences and therefore creates one lone sentence.

Use separate sentences.

Incorrect: The boy’s replica of the “Venus de Milo” was perfect it won first prize.

Correct: The boy’s replica of the “Venus de Milo” was perfect . It won first prize.

Use a semi-colon.

Incorrect: The movie’s explicit scenes of violence are really graphic the movie received an R rating.

Correct: The movie’s explicit scenes of violence are really graphic; it was rated R.

Use a coordinating conjunction

Incorrect: The general deployed troops to defensive positions ordered the troops to dig a ditch and ordered the troops to wait for more instructions.

Correct: The general deployed troops to defensive positions, ordered them to dig a ditch, and wait for more instructions.
