  3. Functions • to keep the wearer comfortable • clothing provides protection • reduce the level of risk during activity, such as work or sport

Cultural aspects • gender differentiation of clothing is considered appropriate for men and women • in Western societies, skirts, dresses and high-heeled shoes are usually seen as women's clothing • Islam requires women to wear hijab (the headscarf to the burqa) • men may sometimes choose to wear men's skirts such as togas or kilts

Social status • clothing may be used to indicate rank or status • in traditional Hawaiian society only high-ranking chiefs could wear feather cloaks • in China, before the establishment of the republic, only the emperor could wear yellow • in ancient Rome, for example, only senators were permitted to wear garments dyed with Tyrian purple

Religion • sometimes it is worn only during the performance of religious ceremonies • Jains wear unstitched cloth pieces when performing religious ceremonies (the unstitched cloth signifies unified and complete devotion to the task at hand) • Sikhs wear a turban as it is a part of their religion • the cleanliness of religious dresses in Eastern Religions like Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism
