  2. Root Words • Help you figure out the meaning of words • Expand your vocabulary • Help you pass the California High School Exit Exam (and perform better on all tests) • Are the prefix or suffix of a word

  3. Beginning or End? • Prefix Pre = before The root would be found at the beginning of a word • Suffix • Affix = join to The root would be joined to the end of the word or joined to the prefix and followed by yet another suffix

  4. Greek • Photos = Light • Photograph – picture drawn by light • Telephoto – light from far away Find two more words with photo as a prefix or suffix

  5. Greek • Graph = to write or draw • Photograph – picture drawn by light • Phonograph – machine for writing or recording sound • Telegraph – writing from far away

  6. Greek Tele = far away, distant • Television – seeing distant things • Telephone – sound from far away • Telescope – device for looking at distant objects

  7. Greek • Metron = measure • Meter = unit of measure • Geometry = measurement of the earth • Symmetry = measuring the same

  8. Greek • Tropos = Turning • Phototropic – turning toward light as leaves and flowers do • Heliotrope – a flower named for its tendency to turn toward the sun

  9. Greek • Philia = love, friendship • Philosopher – one who loves wisdom • Philadelphia – city of brotherly love

  10. Greek • Phobos = Fear • Phobia – irrational fear • Agoraphobia = fear of open space

  11. Greek • Syn = with, together Sympathy – to feel with someone else Symphony – sounds that go together Photosynthesis – process by which light puts plant nutrient together to make green chlorophyll

  12. Greek • Thesis – Put, place, position • Thesis – a position taken in an argument supported by a set of reasons. • Theme – an essay or composition on a certain subject with a statement and supporting reasons.

  13. Greek • Kinesis = Movement • Kinetic – relating to movement of bodies • Kinesiology – study of human movement
