  1. “Cold War” Cause & Effect • Many nations needed economic help to recover from the devastation of World War II & resist communism • Each side believed the other had the wrong system of government • The U.S. wanted to stop the spread of communism • Too many East Germans were fleeing embarrassing Communists • Truman would not let Berlin fall into Soviet hands • Germans could no longer cross to each side of the city and many were cut off from family • The U.S. gave $12 billion in aid to Western European Nations • The U.S. helped Greece and Turkey withstand communist threats • The Cold War began and lasted nearly 50 years • Stalin realized that the West would not abandon West Berlin & lifted the blockade
