From NDs to Global • Status of 2012: Annual to twice-annual wall-to-wall acquisitions of NDs with 20 – 30 m sensors • Considerations to expand acquisition area • UN-REDD pilot countries and observers • World Bank Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) • Full tropical belt • Developing forested countries outside the tropics • Temperate and boreal zone for full global observations • Technical reasons

Considerations • UN-REDD Pilot (not in FCT): • Bolivia, Cambodia, Ecuador, Nigeria, Panama, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, the Philippines, Solomon Islands, Viet Nam and Zambia(red in FCPF) • FCPF REDD Preparation Grant 3.6 MUS$ • Mexico, Colombia*, Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Congo, Costa Rica, Ghana, Liberia, Indonesia, Viet Nam*(blue in FCT) * signature expected soon • Include neighbouring countries first

Expansion Plan • Annual to twice-annual wall-to-wall acquisitions of NDs • Near term (2012 – mid 2013) • Expand ND Indonesia to whole country • Add Cambodia, Republic of Congo, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama, Viet Nam • Mid term (mid 2013 – 2014) • Whole tropical and subtropical forest • Global coverage (2015+) • Temperate and boreal forest

Additional Considerations? • Take for the expansion strategy additionally into account: • Donor preferences as with FCT? • Capacity building activities e.g. SilvaCarbon? • Direct country requests e.g. Ghana at SDS-3? • EU funded FP7 REDD project countries e.g. Central African Republic, Fiji, …? • Full regional coverage e.g. Congo Basin? • …?
