  1. Electric Based Transportation Steven O. Arlint University of Portland student

  2. Why Go Electric? • Cost • Environment • Performance (maintenance)

  3. Electric Vehicles (EV) • Light

  4. Medium

  5. Heavy

  6. What goes in an EV • Batteries • Motor • Power Electronics • Similar vehicle components elsewhere

  7. Batteries • Advantages over gas • Heat problems • Four main types (there are others) • Lead acid • NiCad • NIMH • Lithium

  8. Lead acid • First technology available • High current, low Internal resistance (Ir) • Low efficiency (chemistry issue)

  9. NiCad • Next available technology • High current, extremely rugged • Bad for environment • Expensive

  10. NIMH • Came after NiCad • Environmentally friendly • Heat, price, Ir, charge issues

  11. Lithium • Modern technology • High current, high efficiency, moderate price • Prone to explosion, charging issues

  12. Lithium explosion

  13. What is the answer then? • Make the best of what we have • New rising technologies (Silicon, NiZn) • Put our hope into the future?

  14. Motor • Limit scope to DC motor (there are others) • Advantages • Disadvantages • Properties

  15. DC motor Advantages • Low cost (old technology) • PM variety has high torque to volume • Easy to control • Rugged

  16. DC motor Disadvantages • Friction • Maintenance • Efficiency

  17. DC motor properties • Speed vs. voltage • Torque vs. current • Power measured in watts or horsepower • Optimum power operating regime

  18. Power Electronics • PWM mode • MOSFETs vs. IGBTs (SCRs also used) • Regenerative braking • Heat dissipation

  19. Similar components • Transmission? • Car itself • Stereo
