  4. ELSA Development Foundation = EDF • Private foundation, legally distinct from ELSA International • International Board of ELSA are the Board of Directors, Treasurer of ELSA is the Chairman • Exists only to provide funding for activities by ELSA Groups through grants

  5. Modus Operandi • National Groups contribute annually based on sponsorship revenues • Treasurer of ELSA UK can apply for Local Groups • EDF receives applications and allocates applications throughout the year • Board of Directors is authorised to allocate 94% of its capital + yearly contributions • Leftover funds will be added to next year’s capital

  6. State of the Foundation • Insufficient applications - year on year • Unallocated funds every year • Foundation is eager to grant more The Money is up for grabs

  7. Important Things to Note • Reimburses Losses • No amount limit • Requests above €1000 are unlikely to be considered • Grants of £400-£500 are feasible • You can apply as often as you’d like • Only quality applications will be accepted

Eligible Projects • Events in the Key Areas (AA, MCC, S&C, STEP) • e.g. Moot Court Competition, Negotiations Competition, ELSA Law School • Expenses of ELSA Trainers • Accommodation/Catering/Travel for Trainer in Training Session Organised by LG • Organisation of International Statutory Meetings (ICMs, IPMs, SAMs, KAMs)

  12. How to Apply

  13. Are you Eligible? • Is there an event? • You can’t apply for an ongoing programme, there must be a clear event, with participants and a date. • Does your event meet the eligibility criteria? • Identify the Key Area • Are there expenses? • If no money is spent, there can be no grant. • If yes, get in touch with the Treasurer of ELSA UK to submit your application.

  14. What to Submit? Must Cover: • Activity Description • Examples available upon request • Budget • Template at officers.elsa.org • General and financial information about the applicant; • Description of the project; • Estimation of the impact of the grant on the situation of the applicant group; • Detailed budget of the project

When to Apply? • No later than three weeks before the event. • Application decision is communicated within three weeks of end of Application Cycle* Cycles for 2018/2019 • First cycle ended on 30 September • Second cycle ends on 31 December • Third cycle ends on 14 April • Fourth cycle ends 30 June

How to Get Your Money? • EDF only reimburses losses! • Within four weeks of the event, a full Activity and Financial Report has to be submitted. • Examples available upon request. • Provide receipts/proof for all expenses • Demonstrate the loss of money - that amount will be reimbursed • £ converted to € (with proof of exchange rate) • Within four weeks of report, the amount will be credited to the Local Group

  18. Example A • ELSA Group A organises Free Legal Advice sessions at Community Centres once every fortnight in collaboration with their Law School. They alternate between five community centres in the city and neighbouring villages. The students volunteer their time, and instead the ELSA Group reimburses their travel and provides refreshments. Promotional materials, roller banners and certificates account for additional expenses. • Is ELSA Group A eligible for EDF funding? How would you pitch an application?

Example B • ELSA Group B is organising a project called “Introduction to Arbitration.” The project consists of a seminar series in which solicitors practising international commercial arbitration give trainings relevant to their field of work over the span of a five week period. The series ends with a competition in which the participants represent the opposing sides in a fictional case before an arbitral tribunal. The winning team each receive cash prizes and the best oralist receives a one day’s work experience at a specialist law firm. A prosecco reception is hosted after the event in which participants can network with the solicitors involved. All participants receive certificates. • Is ELSA Group B eligible for EDF funding? How would you pitch an application?

  20. Example C • ELSA Group C is organising an international study and institutional visit to Luxembourg. They will be visiting the European Court of Justice and meeting with a Justice of the Court. Members of ELSA Group C have been conducting a Legal Research Group comparing the jurisprudence of English courts and the CJEU in issues related to environmental law. They will also be arranging meetings with ELSA Luxembourg who are organising an academic and social programme for the participants. Accommodation is at a city hotel and breakfast, lunch and dinner catering is included in the participation fee. • Is ELSA Group B eligible for EDF funding? How would you pitch an application?
