  1. Plastic Bags Team 6

  2. General Information • 1900s: First sandwich bag is invented • Made from carbon extracted from petroleum and high-density polyethylene • Uses vary from shopping to miscellaneous everyday tasks

  3. Research and Development • Dr. Leo Baekeland researched a way to create a moldable polymer that maintained its shape when cooled • 1957: First baggies are introduced • Used for preserving food in a nontoxic way • Inexpensive to produce

  4. Marketing • Consumers see them as a “space-age” project • “Endless” uses • Used worldwide • Never consider long term effects

  5. Manufacturing • High and low density polyethylene are mixed • Heated until the resins are able to be blow into bubbles • Bubbles are blown about three stories vertically • Allows for proper cooling time and material distribution • The bubble is sent through a series of rollers • The rolled film is primed for printing • Hot knives cut the film into bags • Handles are bottom are formed • All scrap is reused

  6. Manufacturing

  7. Consumer Use • Sold in bulk to stores • Given to consumers to transport personal bought goods • Consumers may reuse in everyday life

  8. Final Disposition (Good) • Reusable/Recyclable • Very inexpensive to recycle • Inexpensive to produce • Made from natural gas • Convenient and light • Minimal contributor to greenhouse gases

  9. Final Disposition (Bad) • Too often littered • Litter harms wildlife • Litter ruins natural scenery • Takes a VERY long time to degrade • When burned can produce toxic gases
