  1. “I Want…” a look at selfishness and service

  2. Introduction • at the heart of many of our society’s issues is selfishness and a lack of personal responsibility • thinking about self first, regardless of consequences • some even consider themselves above any law • perhaps not to that extreme, Christians can still find selfishness at the root of many problems • source of discord between brethren (James 3:16-4:1) • our purpose is not ourselves (Mt. 20:20-28)

  3. The Peace of Contentment • we are created to find fulfillment in humility • better to recognize our need for God and others (1 Pet. 5:5-7)(Acts 20:35)(Rom. 12:3-18) • there is gain in contentment (1 Tim. 6:6-8) • there is no peace in selfishness • it is never enough (Prov. 23:4-5; 30:11-16) • the end is not as intended (Lk. 14:8-11)(Mt. 6:5) • God is against those who think only of themselves (James 4:6)

  4. Having a Serving Heart • be mindful of our motives • (Mt. 6:19-21)(1 Jn. 2:15-17) • learn from our examples • (Phil. 2:3-8; 1:12-14; 2:29-30; 4:3-4) • remembering God’s care for us (4:6-7) • many ways to serve, so take action • (1 Pet. 4:8-11)(James 2:8-17)

  5. Conclusion • selfishness is man’s completely natural response • this is why if we are not consciously thinking about God and others when we act, we need to reexamine • we must be trained in service and contentment • even so, for those who trust God’s promises to the humble, there is great reward • peace and fellowship among one another • peace and fellowship with God – hope of Heaven
