Athenian Democracy • Democracy = Rule by the People • 700 BCE- Monarchy (rule by one) becomes Aristocracy (rule by land-owning upper class elites) • People demanded more rights and better treatment • Reforms • 594 BCE- Solon gave more power to the Assembly (open forum for all citizens), more government positions for people, easier to get citizenship • 507 BCE- Cleisthenes created legislature: “Council of 500” made up of randomly chosen citizens to make laws • Citizens = Free Male Landowners; excluded women, slaves, merchants • Athens: Direct Democracy (citizens vote on laws) • USA: Representative Democracy (citizens vote for representatives who vote for laws)

Athenian PhilosOPhy • Philosophy = Love of Wisdom, study of fundamental questions about life, reality, the universe, nature, etc • In Greece, some conservatives did not like philosophers because they challenged accepted ideas about religion, politics, and society • Three most famous Classical Greek Philosophers • Socrates • Plato (student of Socrates) • Aristotle (student of Plato) • According to Roman Philosopher Cicero, Socrates was "the first who brought philosophy down from the heavens, placed it in cities, introduced it into families, and obliged it to examine into life and morals, and good and evil.”
