  2. The Need • Anyone can develop cancer; however, about 76 percent of all cancers are diagnosed in individuals age 55 and older. • In the United States, men have slightly less than a 1-in-2 lifetime risk of developing cancer; for women, the risk is a little more than 1-in-3. • About 1,399,790 new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed in the United States during 2006. • Roughly 564,830 Americans are expected to die of cancer in 2006, making it the second most common cause of death in the United States. 1-in-4 deaths are attributed to cancer in the U.S.

  3. The Market • Aflac’s Personal Cancer Indemnity Plan is designed to help with expenses of cancer treatment that may not be covered by major medical insurance. Even the best insurance plans typically have deductibles and copayments that must be paid out of pocket. • Cancer treatment often creates other costs not covered by traditional insurance, such as travel and lodging expenses to receive treatment in another city, lost wages because of time away from work, child-care expenses, or the expense of hiring household help.

  4. The Market Continued… • By offering a First-Occurrence Benefit immediately upon the diagnosis of cancer, Aflac provides policy holders with a one-time payment to be used however they wish. Thereafter, benefits that assist with continuing costs are offered for specific inpatient or outpatient cancer treatments. • It also offers a Wellness Benefit for many common cancer screenings.
