  2. The aim of this study : Determine the prevalence of asthma among the population of Mexican origin in El Paso, Tx. Examine the association of atopy with asthma. Determine the association between intergenerational family asthma/atopy and childhood asthma/atopy. Analyze the influence of indoor pollution in the diagnosis of ashtma and atopy.

  4. Asthma • Chronic inflammatory disorder of the airway. • Recognized as a complex genetic disease mediated by exposures to environmental factors.

  16. Ancestry Informative Markers ( AIMs) • Used to identify protective or detrimental effects in asthmatic conditions. • Indigenous ancestry has been shown to be a protective in the GALA study. • On the contrary , African ancestry increases the risk of asthmatic conditions in children.

Conclusion • Both maternal and paternal disease state affects offspring disease, but the maternal asthma is the most potent contributor. • Children with a parent with asthma are about twice as likely to have asthma. • Those with a parent and grandparent with asthma are about five times more likely to have asthma. • Therefore there is a strong association between intergenerational family and childhood asthma.

Conclusion • Our participants had a lower percentage of European markers and higher percentage of African markers than previously suspected • Wefound a lifetime prevalence of 26.1 % and a current asthma prevalence of 20.8 % among children in El Paso, Tx. • This asthma prevalence is two times the national average
