  8. Define Your Search • Determine your career interests (see Career Exploration research guide) • Conduct informational interviews • Ask yourself: • What type of job do I want? • What industries are I interested in working in? • Where, geographically, do I want to work?

Laying the Groundwork: Networking • Networking is the art of building and sustaining mutually beneficial relationships • Join a professional association • Student organizations and chapters • Use the Encyclopedia of Associations! • Career Fairs • Employer presentations • Social networking, i.e. LinkedIn

Finding posted positions • SCDC services: • SCDCOnline • OCR (on campus recruiting) • Direct Apply • EDRS • Internship search sites • Print internship directories • Vault Online Career Library • General job search websites • Industry-specific job search sites • Professional associations • Your College or Department website

  13. The Proactive Approach: Targeting Companies Directly • ES&P Archives • Print company directories • Electronic company databases Where? Company Directories Research Guide

  14. Your turn! Use the Worksheet to create a list of potential employers using the library databases we just went over.

  15. Green= Action! I have a list of potential employers…now what?? • Research the company website. Look for terms like: Careers, Employment Opportunities, Internships, Staff Directory, Contact Us, Human Resources. • Use multiple job search strategies! • Use your network to identify contacts and potential leads in the company. • Apply for posted positions advertised on the website. • Cold calling- by phone and email. Tip: Use the Calling a Company Phone Script!

  17. I got an interview! Now what? • Be informed- research on the company beforehand. • Databases: • Hoover’s to get a general overview • Business & Company Resource Center • Practice, practice, practice! • Business etiquette

  18. I got an offer! • For co-ops: Stay in close contact with your co-op coordinator. You still need to submit the proper paperwork! • For full-time jobs: Begin researching salaries for salary negotiation

  19. Some Tips! • Be creative, open-minded, and flexible • Use multiple job search strategies! • Treat this like an extended research project. • Start early, stay organized, and be persistent.
