Binder Goal: Facilitate applied research on campus and in Champaign-Urbana Jeffrey Binder, director, joined late last year; previously associate director for nuclear science and engineering at Oak Ridge National Laboratory; earned three degrees from Illinois Unit in COE, transitioned to Campus level over time (~5 years) $9M internal seed fund in place, with external projects just starting to ramp up Office established in Research Park ILLINOIS APPLIED RESEARCH INSTITUTE

JUMP ARCHES LAUNCHED Jump Applied Research for Community Health through Engineering Simulation will create joint research projects between OSF HealthCare in Peoria and Engineering at Illinois Jump replicates the patient care areas of a hospital — from the exam room to the operating room — and combines actual medical equipment and devices with state-of-the-art simulation approaches and training. Supported by $25M challenge gift from Chicago-based Jump Trading

UI LABS DIGITAL MANUFACTURING In February President Obama announced a new Chicago-based public-private partnership called the Digital Lab for Manufacturing Engineering at Illinois will have a central role in the lab, which will be based at UI Labs in Chicago Funded by $70M from the US Department of Defense + more than $250 in funding from industry, academic, and other government partners Lab will develop data integration technologies for the manufacturing industry

NEWS: Yahoo! broke ground on new facility in February; will be 40,000 sq. ft.; additional staff to be hired over next two years Provides an environment where technology-based businesses can work with faculty and students 100 companies and growing More than 1,400 people work in high-tech careers; more than 400 student interns EnterpriseWorks startup incubator with more than 50 companies commercializing technology; startups have raised $407 million in outside capital Multinational corporations like ADM, Abbott Laboratories, Caterpillar, John Deere, Dow Chemical, Raytheon, Riverbed, Sony, and State Farm RESEARCH PARK

GRADUATE NUMBERS FOR FALL 2014 Total applicants: 1,897 (230 domestic) As of March 12, 171 offers sent out (offers are made until April 15) 151 of these offered TA or RA Expect as many as 250 offers to be made Graduate recruitment event held in February Two-day event featuring faculty presentations, current student panel, tours 21 students attended

INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS • Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, Vietnam: A 2+2 program was established with the electrical engineering program in December 16, 2013. • Ho Chi Minh City International University, Vietnam: Course articulations pending for a 2+2 program established at the college level. Two students from HCMUI applied for junior-level transfer to ECE ILLINOIS for Fall 2014. • Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden: Course articulations pending for an exchange agreement. • Illinois-Zhejiang University: plans for a pilot start in Fall 2014.
