  1. The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobewritten by CS Lewis’ Page 1 = Title, Pages 2 = Characters brainstorm, Pages 3 onwards = questions

  2. Peter (Rock), Susan (Lily), Edmund (Prosperous protection), Lucy (Light) Page Two: Characters pageGlue in photos of the three main characters. Leave room for a brain storm. Aslan The Witch Peter Susan Edmund Lucy

  3. CS Lewis (the author of The Chronicles of Narnia) is very symbolic. Here is what some of the characters symbolise. Add these to you characters page. • The Children symbolise people (like me & you). • The Witch symbolises death. • Aslan symbolises life (among other things). • If you get stuck on a question you may want to replace the person’s name with what they symbolise.

  4. “The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe” Marking Criteria All answers must be full sentences. Each answer should be at least 2 lines, and usually 3 or more. Sometimes you will be asked a question with many answers.

  5. When and where is this film set? What is the major world event? How would you feel to be in the situation? Would you want to be a hero? How would it feel to be sent away to a safer place? What would be the good side? What would be the bad side?

  6. What do you think of the professor?

  7. Why do you think the Fawn is surprised that Lucy is human? What is special about humans? Lucy goes into Narnia and introduces herself to a stranger. Do you think she is brave, curious, silly, other? Why?

  8. The snow is very symbolic, who does Mr Tumnis link the 100 year winter to? A winter without any Christmas, what does this symbolise? Is Narnia a ‘happy’ place? What other clues influenced your answer?

  9. The White Witch symbolises death/the devil. How do you know this? Why does she give Edmund Turkish Delight? Why is she nice to Edmund? Why does she want to meet all the children? What does the Bible (Matthew 6:1-4) say about doing nice things so you can get something out of it?

  10. Why did Peter and Susan not believe Lucy about going to Narnia? Based on past experience who should they have believed Edmund or Lucy? Would you have believed Lucy? Why?

  11. Hope: Some of the animals live in hope of a better Narnia. What is there hope based on? Who is Aslan? As well as representing ‘life’ WHO else do you think he could represent? If you were one of the four children, how would you feel with that pressure of leading an army and rescuing Narnia? Where has Edmund gone? Why?

  12. How has the Witch used Turkish delight to trap Edmund? Have you ever been tricked into doing the wrong thing like Edmund has been?

  13. The children are ‘unlikely heroes’. Read about Paul in Ephesians 3:8-9. How is Paul an unlikely person for God to choose for big plans? What are the negatives of God choosing an unlikely hero? What are the positives of God choosing an unlikely hero?

  14. Edmund gives the Witch information about his siblings whereabouts to save his life. Why would he sell his family out like this? Who is he thinking of? “I believe in a free Narnia” How have Mr Tumnis’ actions displayed his beliefs?

  15. Add the gifts to your character page. As well as what you think they symbolise.

  16. The snow is melting, the 100 year winter is almost over. There must be something symbolic about this. What is it? “Just because some man in a red coat hands you a sword, that doesn’t make you a hero” What does make a hero?

  17. “Think about whose side you’re on” - White Witch If you were in Edmund’s situation (held captive by the Witch) whose side would you be on? What type of leader is Aslan? Deep magic, what is it? What do you think it symbolises?

  18. Why does the Witch ‘own’ Edmund? Who made up this rule? Why can’t Aslan just bite the Witch’s head off while they are in the tent? What is there in the real world that can’t do, no matter how strong you are? Eg. you can’t force someone to be nice. “I was there when it was written” read John 1:1-5, who do you think Aslan symbolises? Why?

  19. Read about Jesus’ death Mark chapters 14 and 15, • (or just the highlights in 14:43-52, 15:16-21, and 15:33-47) • Then complete these sentences. • Aslanis alone, most of his friends are still in camp. Jesus friends were... • Aslan was willing to go to the Stone Table. Jesus when willingly to… • Aslan is mocked and shorn. Jesus was humiliatedby… • Why didn’t Aslan fight back? • Why didn’t Jesus fight back? • Why did all the baddies celebrate Aslan’s death?

  20. How do you think the boys feel facing this army without Aslan? How would you feel?

  21. Read about Jesus’ resurrection in Mark 16:1-13 • What parallels can you see here? • Look at what did Aslan/Jesus do? • What was the role of girls/women? • People often say “Jesus defeated death” what do you think this means? • The rule that traitors belong to the Witch is now broken along with the table. The rule that everyone must die is broken as Jesus is resurrected. With this in mind, what do you think John3:16 means?

  22. What is symbolic about Edmund breaking the Witch’s staff the source of her power? Does she have power over him any more? Why do you think that the author chose to have Aslan kill the Witch rather than Peter? (you may want to swap the names out for what they symbolise) After the battle Lucy goes around healing everyone. What role do you think you have in healing the world/making the world a better place?

  23. Edmund had a bad start and fell in with the wrong crowd. Do you think it was fare that he got the same reward as everyone else? What does this say about Aslan’sability to forgive? What have you learnt about Jesus’ ability to forgive?

  24. Describe Peter and Edmunds relationship. How does it start? How does it change? Why does it change?

  25. The children represent peoples’ involvement in God’s plan for the world. C. S. Lewis has chosen names for his characters that symbolise the types of traits he thinks are beneficial to God’s plan. Peter Susan Edmond Lucy

  26. Here are the meanings of each of the Children’s names. How have they lived up to these names? Peter – Rock (look at Matthew 16:18) Susan – Short form of Susannah. In the Bible Susannah was a woman of courage who defended herself against wrongful accusation. Edmond – Prosperous protection Lucy – Light (as in bright, not little weight)

  27. Alsangives life with his breath. The Greek word for breath is ‘Spiritos’ the root word for ‘Spirit’. What does God’s Spirit do in Acts 2?
