  2. Ratios • A comparison of two quantities a and b, where b is not equal to 0. • Can be written in three ways: a to ba:bab • Read “the ratio of a to b” • Should always be written in simplest form, but NOT as a mixed or whole number.

  3. Examples Put your answer on your whiteboard. • Write the ratio of boys to girls in this class. • Write the ratio of students to teachers in this class.

  4. Proportions • An expression that states that two ratios are equivalent. • The general form: where b ≠ 0, d ≠ 0

  7. Writing & Solving Proportions • Each day, the seals at an aquarium are each fed 8 pounds of food for every 100 pounds of their body weight. A seal at the aquarium weighs 280 pounds. How much food should the seal be fed per day? The seal eats 22.4 pounds of food per day

  8. Writing & Solving Proportions • Assume the distance from Cleveland to Cincinnati is 4.2 centimeters on the map to the right. Estimate the actual distance between Cleveland and Cincinnati. Put your work and answer on your whiteboard Cleveland is 357 kilometers away from Cincinnati
