  2. Food Breakdown and Absorption • Large intestine does not produce any digestive enzymes • Bacteria feed on leftover nutrients • They produce methane and hydrogen sulfide • Bacteria produce vitamins • Large intestine absorbs these vitamins and water

  3. Feces • Contains • undigested food • Mucus • Millions of bacteria • water

  4. Diarrhea • Watery stools • Food rushed through large intestine before water can be absorbed • May be due to a variety of reasons like bacteria infection • Loss of fluids and electrolytes may cause dehydration

  5. Constipation • Food residue remains in the large intestine too long • Too much water is absorbed • Difficult stool • May result from lack of fiber or diet problems or failure to “heed the call”
