  2. What is National Infection Prevention Week ? • National Infection Prevention Week is an opportunity to promote infection prevention and control as a key element of safe care for both patients and those receiving care in the community. • The week highlights the importance of protecting patients and health-care staff from infection, and the work staff in all healthcare settings undertake to keep patients and clients who come into contact with healthcare services safe and free from healthcare associated infections.

  3. To help ensure that staff working within the diverse healthcare environment and patients homes understand their role, accountability and responsibility in helping to prevent and control healthcare associated infection and communicable diseases To encourage healthcare staff to support and apply the principles of national policy and guidance, in their daily practice –(The Health and Social Care Act 2008: Code of Practice for the NHS on the prevention and control 2009. Department of Health) To remind staff that infection recognises no boundaries and to renew their commitment to joint working in the interest of the wider community (Working together to prevent and control infections 2009. Care Quality Commission) To answer specific IP&C information needs of healthcare assistants and student nurses To signpost student nurses and healthcare support workers towards local resources that should be available in the workplace and also provided from their professional organisations. Aims and Objectives

  4. Collaboration • The collaboration between the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) and NRIC enabled us to target and evaluate the information needs of Nursing Students and Healthcare Support Workers, two important groups of healthcare staff and plan for future NRIC content development • The staff targeted are at present ‘difficult to outreach’ except through their professional organisations (RCN)

  5. Royal College of Nursing (RCN) With a membership of almost 400,000 registered nurses, midwives, health visitors, nursing students, health care assistants and nurse cadets, the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) is the voice of nursing across the UK and the largest professional union of nursing staff in the world. RCN members work in a variety of hospital and community settings in the NHS and the independent sector. The RCN considers Infection prevention and Control a key element of governance and patient safety systems and is committed to supporting nurses to enhancing nursing practice and awareness in this area, highlighting the unique role of the nurse in improving the quality of care through infection prevention to patients regardless of the care setting.
