  2. Project Overview • Objective: • Redesign team P12031's Motion Assistive Seating Device for Sailing (Keith Burhans) Gold Medal Sailing Seat Motion Assistive Seating Device

  3. Specifications • Primary customer needs: • Provide adjustability for multiple users • Provide adjustability for other Sonar boats • Increase safety • Increase mechanical advantage • Provide enough space for Jib Transfer Bench (P13031) • Translated into engineering specifications

  4. Engineering Specifications 1 = most important

  5. Design: First Steps • Functional decomposition

  6. Design: Concept • Concept development iterations • Two design proposals • Redesigned trackless system • Modified track system design (system constraints + customer preference) • Primary improvement goals: • Hand crank, seat position, and foot rest adjustability • Reduced impact on body when swinging from side to side • Mounting plate that can secure different seat shells • Adjustable platform handle locks to lock in place in different Sonar boats • Emergency quick-release system

  7. Final System

  8. Design: Adjustability • Anthropometric analysis to determine amount of adjustability • Accommodate about 90% of the population • Adjustability:

  9. Design Components • Hand Crank

  10. Design Components • Pedestal Base

  11. Design Components • Track Platform

  12. Test Results

  13. Test Results

  14. Success and Failure • System provides full range of adjustability • Foot rest angle (bonus!) • System provides greater comfort to user • Corbeau seat • 5 point harness • Quick release tiller • System is expensive • System should be made more robust • Removal of wooden components • Foot rests • Many parts to manufacture

  15. Final System

  16. Future Work • Provide adjustability for other popular sailing boats • Ideal 18 • Freedom 20 • Increase system portability • Provide ergonomic handcycling grips (30° tilt) • Decrease total installation time
