  3. Who can go on exchanges? YOU! If you are: • currently in a full-time undergraduate degree at the University of Surrey • you have the support of your Department for the proposed programme • in good academic standing • able to cover the cost of the exchange (travel, accommodation, visa fees, insurance, cost of living etc)

  4. When you go abroad… • You will usually do this in the second year of your degree course • You can go for one semester or one year • You are still registered as a Surrey student • You continue to pay fees at Surrey • You pay no tuition fees to the partner university abroad

  5. Academic Requirements • usually need a good course match (never completely perfect) • must check with your personal tutor and your second year course director • must prepare you for level 3 • care about professional requirements • credit transfer at the end

  6. Personal Requirements • high academic calibre • no likelihood of level 1 re-sits • overseas from July onwards • must have written consent by tutor • adaptable (academically &socially) • committed (no last minute change of mind)

Why should I go? • Experiencing a different culture will broaden your horizons • Increase your cultural awareness • Develop a much more international outlook • Help you to become more flexible and adaptable in your work and study • Chance to develop lasting international friendships and business links Generally, mobile students are seen by employers as more ‘rounded’ individuals because they have experienced different study and work environments and they have developed their social skills. Academically, your period of study abroad will contribute credits towards your degree and broaden your academic experience in your chosen subject.

  14. How much will it cost? LEA - Contact your LEA to find out if you are eligible for any additional funding and notify them that you are planning to study abroad. Tuition - Reduced fees at Surrey if you go for a year. No tuition fees abroad. Accommodation - Usually on campus and usually cheaper than in the UK. Often with room mates. Possibly with meal plans. Travel costs and Insurance Visa Fees Study Books, Spending Money etc…

  15. How do I apply? • Inform your Personal Tutor that you are interested. Find out whether your Department is willing to support your application. • Check the course descriptions published online by the partner university and ensure that they are acceptable to your Course Director. • Come and talk to the International Relations Office(28/29BA00 – please make an appointment via email before you come: a.strauss@surrey.ac.uk)

  16. How do I apply? • complete the University of Surrey application form • complete the application forms required by the partner institution • ask your Personal Tutor to write a confidential letter of recommendation • write a short personal statement • provide evidence of 'financial support' sufficient to meet expenses. • include a passport sized photo with your application Deadline for applications is the 28 February 2008. We aim to have a firm list of acceptable candidates for each University by the end of April 2008.

Life in the USA • Usually superb sports and recreation facilities • No significant language problems • You will need a credit card • Alcohol is illegal if you are under 21 • Car hire can be difficult if you are under 21 • Different academic system: • very directed, little reading around subject • attendance required • tests / multiple choice exams every week • short answers • consistent amount of work - less emphasis on final exam • higher pass mark

University of Cincinnati • Surrey’s exchange with UC started in 1998 • Academic Ranking of World Universities (Shanghai Jiaotong Index) MSU was ranked among the 200 best in the world (out of +2500). • Offers courses in Applied Sciences, Engineering, Humanities, Business, Arts, Music, Health Sciences etc... • Over 10,000 staff members, over 35,000 students. Annual budget of more than 1 billion USD.

University of North Texas • Surrey’s exchange with UNT started in 1986, about 70 Surrey students went there • Offers courses in Biological and other Sciences, Engineering, Humanities, Business, Arts, Music, etc… • Over 33,500 students • UNT has one of the nation's best music schools and offers the world's leading graduate program in environmental ethics and environmental philosophy • Located in Denton, a friendly college town of about 100,000 people located 35 miles north of Dallas

North Carolina State University • New exchange with NCSU in 2008 • Over 31,000 students from nearly 100 different countries • Known for its leadership in education and research, and globally recognized for its science, technology, engineering and mathematics leadership. • Also offers Business Studies, Economics, Psychology, Art etc… • NCSU ranks fourth in the nation in undergraduate engineering degrees • In Academic Ranking of World Universities (Shanghai Jiaotong Index) NCSU was ranked in the top 150 out of more than 2500. • Located in Raleigh, the state's capital city, which is consistently ranked as one of the nation's best places to live and work

University of Maryland • Surrey’s exchange with UMD started in 1990 and since then 26 Sociology students from Surrey have studied there. • Ranked 79 in the world by THES in 2007 • Over 35000 students and more than ten percent of UM students come from outside the U.S • Marylands Sociology Department is ranked 24th among all sociology departments nationally by the U.S. News and World Report’s annual rating system. • Internationally reputed faculty in the specialty areas of Comparative Sociology, Demography, Development, Gender, Work and Family, Military Sociology, Social Psychology, Stratification, and Theory.

Colorado School of Mines • Surrey’s exchange with CSM started in 1994 • Department of Chemical Engineering only • Public research university devoted to engineering and applied science • Over 4000 students • In addition to strong education and research programs in traditional fields of science and engineering, Mines is one of a very few institutions in the world having broad expertise in resource exploration, extraction, production and utilization. • CSM has the highest admissions standards of any university in Colorado and among the highest of any public university in the U.S.

  23. Nanyang Technological University • Surrey’s exchange with NTU started in 1998 • One of Asia’s most prestigious universities! Ranked 69 in the world best universities by THES in 2007 • Located in Singapore, over 27,500 students. • All teaching is in English • Offers excellent courses in Science, Engineering, Business Management, Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences • Truly multicultural, great location, safe environment.

Swinburne University of Technology • Surrey’s exchange with SUT started in 2002 • Originally departmental exchange with the School of Electronics and Physical Sciences • Based in Melbourne, Australia's 2nd largest city • Over 22,600 students, including 5,500 international students • The “Good Universities Guide 2007” gave SUT 5 stars for Teaching Quality , Generic Skills, Overall Satisfaction, Graduate Rating of the Overall Education Experience • Offers courses in Arts, Science, Technology, Engineering, Management, Psychology, Computing, Social Science, Entrepreneurship, Hospitality etc…
