  2. Do and Dont's with QUATS as Softner Agent Quaternary ammonium cations also known as Quats are ammonium salts. Each quat molecule has a central “core” which is a positively- charged nitrogen atom (N+) that is attached to other chemically-active groups that include carbon. Quats are disinfectant chemicals commonly found in disinfectant wipes, sprays and other household cleaners. These are designed to kill germs. It is the stuff that helps the product to be called antibacterial. The occurrence of QUATs: They are naturally present in osmolytes, specifically glycine betaine. Advantages of using Quats: 1. Quats effectively kill many microbes like E. Coli and Staph. 2. They have antimicrobials and disinfectants ability. 3. They kill fungi, amoebas, and enveloped viruses. 4. In food service industries they are used as sanitizing agents. 5. Quaternary ammonium compounds (QUATs) are cationic detergents.
