  7. Oral Vocabulary Ascend: The astronauts ascend to outer space in their spaceship. Ascend means to go up. You ascend to the next floor when you walk upstairs. Show me how you ascend stairs. Descend: When they are finished exploring outer space, the astronauts descend back to Earth in their spaceship. Descend means to go down. You descend when you walk down stairs. Show me how you descend stairs. Orbit: When the astronauts are in outer space, they orbit Earth. Orbit means to go around a planet or something else in space. Earth and other planets orbit, or go around, the Sun. Spaceships orbit Earth. Imagine that you are in a spaceship and your desk is Earth. Show me how you orbit Earth Write each word in a sentence.

The dark spots on the moon are deep pits called craters . The light parts show the thick dust that covers the moon. What is happening in the second picture? Yes, the spaceship is starting ot blast off into space, the area around Earth. The ship will ascend, or go up, to outer space. Page 30-31 Who do you think is inside the spaceship? Yes, astronauts are people trained to fly spaceships. Where has this spaceship landed? Flat, round disks help the ship sit on the moon’s thick dust. What is the print in the dust? Yes, the print shows where an astronaut stepped on the moon. Page 32-33 What does the first picture show? The astronauts descend, or go down, to Earth after exploring the moon. What is this girl dressed as? Yes, this girl is at space camp. Let’s read to find out about outer space. You will read these words in the selection They are

What do you think he does there? Yes, astronauts can fly spaceships and fix things on the ship. Yes, he had a big wish. (Model with 38-41) What more did you learn about Franklin Chang-Diaz? Yes, he got his wish. He learned how to fix things. Now he fixes things in space.

  16. After Reading: What did you learn? What was the selection mainly about? (Model how to summarize) The first four pages were about how Franklin Chang-Diaz had a wish to become an astronaut. The next pages told how he learned to fix things and become an astronaut. I put that all together and pick the most important ideas. The selection is mainly about how Franklin Chang-Diaz became an astronaut.
