  1. Basil Metabolic Rate (BMR) • BMR is the rate at which we burn calories at rest. It is the minimum amount of energy consumed to maintain life functions (breathing, circulation, digestion, growth, etc.) • Weight control is related to BMR in that the higher the BMR the easier it is to burn unwanted calories that would be stored as fat.

  2. Diets and BMR – why diets don’t work!! • Diets are hard to maintain as you are hungry all the time. You may lack energy from the reduced caloric input. Most people binge eat and put on weight lost soon after going off the diet. • In addition Dieting actually causes your BMR to drop as your body tries to conserve calories in reaction to the lower caloric intake. (Starvation Reflex) • As a result you burn calories at a slower rate and weight loss is harder to attain.

  3. Weight Reduction – Exercise and Eat Right • A combination of regular vigorous exercise and a balanced diet is the best way to lose weight. • Vigorous Exercise increases your BMR by up to 30% for the next 8 hours and allows for more efficient burning of calories, weight control while not restricting your diet. • It is easier to maintain as you keep energy levels high but at the same time you burn off unwanted calories.

  4. Other Factors Affecting BMR • AGE - BMR is highest in the growing years up to about age 20. After age 20 BMR drops about 2% per decade. BODY FAT - Higher % Body Fat causes ones BMR to slow down. Leaner people burn calories more efficiently. GENDER - Females’ BMR is about 10% lower on average than males. PREGNANCY - Pregnancy in women can cause about a 20% increase in BMR.

  5. Creeping Obesity • This term refers to what happens as we age and our BMR slows down, about 2% per decade after age 20. • Creeping Obesity refers to gaining weight slowly, about a pound a year, as a result of our reduced rate of BMR. • If a 20 year old continued to consume calories at the same rate without increasing the rate of exercise then they begin to put on weight. • The solution is to eat right and exercise as you age to counteract the reduction in BMR.
