US History 2 • Thematic/Chronologicalstudy of 20th century American History • Foreign Affairs: • Imperialism, World War 1, World War 2, Cold War, Post-Cold War foreign policy, US in the Post-Cold War World • Domestic Affairs: • Liberalism and Progressive Reform, Conservative Reaction of the 20s, Depression/New Deal, Post War conformity of the 50s, Turbulent 60s, Contemporary America • KEY POINT: • To analyze and understand the consequences of HUMAN DECISIONS.

Classroom Practice • The course is challenging. • We want students to analyze the consequences (both good and bad) of human decisions. • Example: What were the consequences of Japan’s decision to attack the United States at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941? • Students will be challenged to recognize the relevance of history and think like historians. • Students are expected to be prepared daily and will be held accountable. • The students are asked to analyze primary and secondary sources for guided classroom discussions, including non-print sources.

Assessments • HEAVY emphasis on writing! • Homework assignments and daily preparation • Note cards, reading quizzes • In class writing activities • Notebook essays • Document analysis • Historical fiction/social history paper • Student prepared presentations • IB and Advanced Placement-type assessments • Content quizzes • Unit Tests • Class participation

Expected Outcomes • Although this is NOT an Advanced Placement course, I strongly recommend the students in my Advance level US 2 course to take the AP US History exam which is offered in May ‘15. • Since the course is challenging, it’s expected that students will become more responsible and independent. • Students will improve their verbal and writing skills. • Critical thinking and analytical skills will improve. • The students will be challenged to make decisions and defend them using logic, reasoning and evidence as support. • My MHS website.
