  1. 3.4 Find and Use Slopes of Lines Objectives: Find the slope of lines Apply the slope of lines to real life situations. Common Core: A-CED-2, A-REI-1, A-REI-3, G-CO-9, G-GPE-5, S-ID-7

  2. The slopeof a line in a coordinate plane is a number that describes the steepness of the line. Any two points on a line can be used to determine the slope.

  3. One interpretation of slope is a rate of change. If y represents miles traveled and x represents time in hours, the slope gives the rate of change in miles per hour.

  4. AB AD CD Use the slope formula to determine the slope of each line. AC

  5. Use the slope formula to determine the slope of JK through J(3, 1) and K(2, –1).

  6. If a line has a slope of , then the slope of a perpendicular line is . The ratios and are called opposite reciprocals.

  7. Write an equation of the line in slope- intercept form. EXAMPLE 1 Write an equation of a line from a graph

  8. Write an equation of the line passing through the point (– 1, 1) that is parallel to the line with the equation y= 2x–3.

  9. Graph 3x + 4y = 12.
