  4. Leadership Foundations : • Leadership Foundations is designed for completion within two years, but can be done quicker per an individual missionary’s desire. • Is designed to provide one of the most effective leadership training and formation programs available to laity in the United States.

Leadership Foundations, like all FOCUS formation, addresses three aspects of an individual’s growth: Human, Intellectual, and Professional • Human formation deals with both character formation—growth in the life of nature through a commitment to development of the virtues—and spiritual formation—growth in the life of grace through participation in prayer and the sacraments.

Leadership Foundations, like all FOCUS formation, addresses three aspects of an individual’s growth: Human, Intellectual, and Professional • Human formation deals with both character formation—growth in the life of nature through a commitment to development of the virtues—and spiritual formation—growth in the life of grace through participation in prayer and the sacraments. • Intellectual formation helps the individual to acquire a solid formation in the teachings of the Catholic Church and Sacred Scripture while also developing a firmer understanding of both Christian and modern culture.

Leadership Foundations provides for three types of learning: Structured Learning, Mentored Learning, and Self Study. • Structured Learning takes place formally at New Staff Training or other formal events. • Mentored Learning takes place within Team Development, within Staff Mentorship, within Colleges at NST, and with one’s supervisor. • Self Study takes place per the missionaries own initiative. The missionary will read a set of books and listen to audio lectures.

Leadership Certificates Augustine Institute Leadership Certificate • Awarded by the Augustine Institute to FOCUS staff members who have completed Leadership Foundations • Tangible evidence from the Augustine Institute of completion of leadership formation • Certificate enables missionaries to opt out of four-six credits at the AI • Two classes (four credits) for Distance Ed. Four classes (six credits) for on-campus program

Leadership Certificates Augustine Institute Leadership Certificate • Awarded by the Augustine Institute to FOCUS staff members who have completed Leadership Foundations • Tangible evidence from the Augustine Institute of completion of leadership formation • Certificate enables missionaries to opt out of four-six credits at the AI • Two classes (four credits) for Distance Ed. Four classes (six credits) for on-campus program Benedictine College Ethical Leadership Certificate • Awarded by Benedictine College to FOCUS staff members who have completed two things: • FOCUS new staff training and formation program (entitled Leadership Foundations) • Graduate school coursework from Benedictine College, offered during the summer, exclusively to FOCUS missionaries. • Missionaries who earn the certificate have tangible evidence from an accredited business school of their leadership formation. • Those who earn the certificate will be able to opt out of the relevant coursework if they attend BC’s MBA program

  19. Staff Mentorship – the goal • There are three functions to every Staff Mentorship meeting: • A non-official place to discuss challenges • Accountability and guidance in prayer and the life of virtue • Encouragement in the FOCUS mission

Staff Mentorship – outline FOCUS Staff Mentoring Outline • PRAY THE “OUR FATHER” • GENERAL CHECK-IN: 10-15 minutes • Catch up on each other’s lives and how things, in general, are going. • Any challenges the mentee would like to discuss in a confidential setting. • ENCOURAGEMENT AND ACCOUNTABILITY: 20-30 minutes • MUST DISCUSS – things directly impacting ability to live missionary life • Prayer, Scripture and Spiritual Reading • Sacramental Life • The Big Three (Chastity, Sobriety, Personal Excellence) • Nature or Grace resolution • Leadership Foundations reading • DISCUSSION IF MENTEE DESIRES – things flowing from the missionary life • Help with prayer and sacramental life, or discussion about the FOCUS scripture/catechism reading plan • Help with relationships on team, students, evangelization, MPD, etc. • CLOSE WITH ANY PRAYER INTENTIONS and a HAIL MARY and a GLORY BE

Some Awesome Formation Opportunities FOCUS Silent Retreats • Silent, directed retreat for 8 days after NST • One of the best ways for missionaries to be rejuvenated On Campus Evangelization Training (1st Year Beta stage) • Training to provide competence, confidence, and commitment • Reach out to the lost and broken… see others as captives instead of enemies Spiritual Impact Retreats (2nd Year Pilot stage) • Retreat to allow the Holy Spirit to deeply penetrate the heart of participants • Healing, deeper commitment to Jesus, growth in desire to evangelize • Spiritual Impact Retreat for 1st/2nd Yr Staff during NST – June 11-12
