  12. (hl2) Experts praise Clinton s bioterror defense plan... Date: Wed, 27 May 1998 00:11:06 -0400 (EDT) From: Stefan Marti <stefanm@media.mit.edu> To: stefanm@media.mit.edu Subject: Experts praise Clinton s bioterror defense plan By Maggie Fox, Health and Science Correspondent WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Clinton's plan to stockpile vaccines and drugs in case of a bioterrorism attack will be difficult to carry out, but makes a good start, experts on biological terrorism said Tuesday. They said it will also help strengthen public health services in general. ``I think this is going to be a very difficult task ahead of us but one that I think is doable,'' Michael Osterholm, who is Minnesota's state epidemiologist and who served as adviser to the federal government on biological terrorism, told Reuters in a telephone interview. On Friday Clinton ordered the stockpiling of vaccines and antibiotics in case of a biological attack. ``We feel like this is a very good start,'' Osterholm, who has warned repeatedly of what he sees as the nation's lack of preparedness, said. A team of specialists commissioned by the government says the five germs most likely to be used in a biological terror attack are anthrax, smallpox, plague, tularemia -- an animal-transmitted infection that causes blisters and pneumonia -- and the bacteria that causes botulism. But Dr. Richard Duma, a former head of the National Foundation on Infectious Diseases, said it would be a mistake to focus on five diseases only. ``I don't think it is easy to protect against because you don't know what particular disease the terrorist might be using,'' he said.

  15. Knothole Our paging system uses two-way pagers to provide a bi-directional link to subscriber's normal email, with additio-nal access to person-al information on the subscriber's compu-ter and external information via the Web and other sources. It is a com-bination of public domain programs, PERL scripts, various other "glue" scripts, some C programs, and a number of lo-cal Media Lab PIMs. A generic extension mechanism is inclu-ded. It is targeted for Unix. Some parts could be easily port-ed to other locales, other parts would have to be re-written to follow local con-ventions.
