Automatic/ManualOriginal Design Usability Issue: Users were not provided with enough information to form appropriate conceptual models of the automatic or manual processes
Automatic/ManualCritique Lack of information lead users to form faulty conceptual models Automatic= “a guide through like my tax software” Manual= “probably too complicated for me”
Automatic Summary ORIGINAL DESIGN • Usability Issue: • Users believe they can and want to decide whether they accept changes made by automatic process REDESIGN • Users can undo and redo changes made
Disc Clean UpOriginal Design • Usability Issue: • Confusion about files • Intimidating and decision intensive (one user even skipped!)
Disc Clean UpCritique Computer Files Concept Models: Word Document “I put them there” I save it My Files Deleted Files I decide if I need them anymore E-mail Attachment I download it Files needed for the computer to run I should not touch these Concept Model for Disc Clean Up: “I thought it would be like defragmenting and get rid of unnecessary things”
ORIGINAL DESIGN Startup Clean Up • Usability Issue: • Users could not tell the initial or changed status of each process REDESIGN • Current and possible states for each process are visible
Learn MoreOriginal Design Usability Issue: Learn More content was either never accessed or left users still feeling confused
Learn MoreCritique Revisiting Concept Models: What are users thinking when we expect them the use Learn More? What do users anticipate Learn More is? Why should I make a process not run on startup? That’ll just be a big block of text I don’t understand. How do I know if I need to perform disc clean up?
Learn MoreReDesign • Acknowledges that users may be asking questions while considering screen. • Users don’t have to search through a big block of text to the answer to their specific question. • Users can keep answers to questions up while they work on speed up step.
