Student Survey Results - Highlights • Across all grades, 93% of students feel safe on the bus most of the time – See Graph #1. • 4th graders felt most safe – 98% responded yes. • 3rd Graders had the lowest number of Yes responses – 88% • The vast majority of students (94%) in all grades believe that there are responsible adults to whom they can turn in the event they encounter problems on the bus – See Graph #2. This a 3% increase in Yes responses from 2010-2011. • Again, 3rd graders had the lowest number of Yes responses – 88% • 94% of students in all grades feel empowered to stop bullying – See Graph #3. • 3rd graders felt most able to prevent bullying – 98% • While 72% of First Grade students responded that students are trying to make the bus ride better, the average percentage of yes responses for all grades was significantly lower. Only 58% of students answered yes to the question of whether most students on the bus are trying to make the bus a peaceful one. – See Graph #4. • 72% of First Graders felt that students were trying to make the bus ride better. • Approximately half of all 5th grade respondents (52%) felt that students were trying to make the bus ride better. • Only 48% of 3rd graders felt that most students were trying to make the bus peaceful. • This is the only repeat question from 2010-2011 in which the % Yes across all grades declined from 2010-2011 – 59% to 58%. Based on student comments, it would appear that this response is impacted by the overwhelming number of students who report that the bus is too loud.

  4. Student Feedback – Summary of Written Comments • Bus is too loud. People are screaming, etc. “They need to work harder on their voices.” • A few respondents indicated that people are eating on the bus. • Several comments that kids are “wrestling on the bus”. • A significant increase in students who commented that they “loved their bus, the bus was doing well, or there was a big improvement.”  • No reports of kids crying on the bus – this is a change from the last survey. • Overall, there was a noticeable increase in the number of favorable comments.

  5. Bus Driver Feedback – Summary by Survey Question • What are some positive changes you have seen on your school bus since we started the Peaceful School Bus Program? (Note: Only 2 bus drivers returned the form) • Both drivers reported that more kids were sliding in to make room others. • More older children were sitting with younger students. • Better behavior, more civility. • What has your experience been like participating in the bus route meetings (if you have been there)? • School is trying to help the bus drivers out with the students by implementing rules that are best for both drivers and children.

Bus Driver Feedback – Summary by Survey Question • What changes do you suggest to improve this program? • None, good to go • This has been a big step forward, no suggestions for further improvement 4. What are some of the ways we could better support you in using this program and in your work as a school bus driver? • Remind the children to stay in their seats, not change seats each time a student gets off the bus.

Parent Feedback – Summary by Survey Question • What are some positive changes you have seen regarding your child/children's experience on the school bus since we started the Peaceful School Bus Program? • Since this is my child’s first year, I did not notice changes, but compared to my own childhood experience on the bus, my son’s experience seemed much better! • Several reported the ride as more enjoyable since the program was implemented. • Several reported that older children seemed more likely to sit with younger children. • The bus seemed less chaotic and crazy.

  8. Parent Feedback – Summary by Survey Question (cont.) • Has your child/children made any comments about riding on the school bus? In the space below, please describe. • Too many substitute drivers. Subs get lost, yell at the kids, and expect the kids to navigate. • Generally my child has been very excited about riding the bus. Once when I came to pick my child up, he asked to ride the bus homeinstead. • It’s more fun to ride the bus. • I only hear things when another child has a problem. • No real complaints except it is loud sometimes. • Not enough space sometimes. • The bus is less crazy this year. It’s not as loud or chaotic. • Crayons and pencils should be allowed on the bus for children who have long bus rides.

Parent Feedback – Summary by Survey Question (cont.) • Based on your understanding of the Peaceful School Bus, please provide us with any additional suggestions or thoughts for us to use in planning our future activities. • Having a copy of the Peaceful School Bus song at home was very helpful to us. Overall we have been very pleased with the school bus experience. • Has not seemed to make a difference. • Less information on bullying, more on being quiet. How to take care of one or two children versus the entire bus. • Please continue this program, it is definitely benefitting the kids. • An extra adult on the bus if we could afford it. • My child is distressed when she has to miss her “specials” for this program. Please reconsider continuing this program, it is not benefitting my child.
