  1. Adventures in Undergraduate Research By: Megan Dunlevy

  2. My Lab • Pan Lab ( Dao Pan, PhD PI) • Experimental Hematology • 4 new undergraduates • 2 older undergraduates • 2 Post-Docs • Salim El-Amouri, PhD • Mei Dai, PhD

  3. Our Research • Lysosomal storage diseases • Enzyme deficiency in lysosome • Causes swelling of liver and spleen, and mental retardation • MPS 1 ( deficient in IDUA) • Gaucher’s disease (deficient in Gcase) • We investigate the use of gene therapy as a treatment option

  4. Gene Therapy • Use of viral vectors to insert DNA encoding the therapeutic enzyme into cells • The DNA is inserted into cells through vector packaging • We use a 4 plasmid system to pack our vectors R U5 GC E1 C PPT GFP I R ES

  5. What? • Research • fun and interesting • Road paved with many failures • Very cooperative effort • Read scientific papers and protocols • Me • Prioritize better • Use every available minute • Balance school, work, and fun

  6. So what? • Challenged me • Balance time better • Make time for important things • Take initiative to look up things for myself • Research • Not what I excepted • More cooperation between labs/ floors

  7. Now What? • Time management skills will be useful in the upcoming years • Ability to read scientific papers will allow me to get through difficult papers in the future • Look forward to new experiences in a different lab in the future
