  1. WHAT IS A VLAN? • Virtual Local Area Network – a set of workstations and/or other network resources that can communicate with each other as if they were on a single isolated physical LAN.

  2. WHY WOULD I WANT VLAN’S ON MY NETWORK? • Reduce network congestion by shrinking the impact of broadcast traffic. • Facilitating user mobility. • Tightening security of wireless access points and other network resources such as printers.

  3. HOW DO VLANS WORK? • The accepted method in today’s networks is called ‘frame tagging’. In this process, a 4 byte field is inserted into the Ethernet header for each data packet. Among other things, this information contains the VLAN id associated with the receiving port on the switch.

  5. Broadcast Control:Broadcasts are required for the normal function of a network. • Many protocols and applications depend on broadcast communication to function properly. (Example: ARP) • The Network above will flood every device with broadcast traffic, dramatically increasing congestion.

  6. In a perfect world, you would like to build a separate physical network for different types of users on your network.

  11. As desirable at this may be, it would be horribly expensive and time consuming to manage.

  12. We can achieve a similar solution by logically separating the network traffic by configuring VLAN’s on our network switches.

  13. HOW CAN A VLAN REDUCE CONGESTION ON MY NETOWORK? • Broadcast traffic sent by a device on a VLAN will not reach any other device that is not on the same VLAN.

HOW CAN VLANS ENHANCE USER MOBILITY? • If users migrate from one physical location on the network to another due to dual roles or organizational moves, the VLAN can be easily re-configured for the new location so that they can still be within the same VLAN and access appropriate network resources.

  16. HOW CAN VLANS HELP CONTROL ACCESS TO YOUR WIRELSS ACCESS POINTS AND NETWORK PRINTERS? • Security:VLANs provide enhanced network security. In a VLAN network environment, with multiple broadcast domains, network administrators have control over each port and user. A malicious user can no longer just plug their workstation into any switch port and sniff the network traffic using a packet sniffer. The network administrator controls each port and whatever resources it is allowed to use.

  17. WHAT DO I NEED TO USE VLANS ON MY NETWORK? • Layer 2 or Layer 3 switches. • It is almost a given that all of you have the necessary equipment to implement basic VLANS. Cisco or HP Procurve switches are commonly designed for VLAN implementation. • For more tailored management of traffic on VLANS, or communicating across separate VLANs, a device that is capable of handling IP addressing and routing is necessary. This can be accomplished with a model of switch that is aware of IP addressing. This is often referred to as a ‘level 3’ switch. • A layout of the physical network, with details of locations of network users and resources.
