  1. The Female Reproductive System Evelyn Anderson & Aastha Minocha

  2. Vagina Structure: • Tube-like muscular organ • Connects uterus to outside of body • Flexible Function: • Canal where sperm is released during intercourse • Birth of baby follows its path

  3. Cervix Structure: • Opening—size of a pencil point • Lower portion of uterus (opens into vagina) Function: • Seals during pregnancy to keep amniotic fluids in • Dilates during labor to about four inches to allow delivery

  4. Uterus (Womb) Structure: • Hollow pear-shaped organ • Has muscular wall and lining • Has many arteries to keep nutrient supply rich Function: • Supplies nutrients to growing fetus • Expands during pregnancy to hold fetus • Connects umbilical cord to mother’s system (ridding of wastes and gases & supply of gases)

  5. Fallopian Tubes Structure: • Thin, soft tubes • Extend the uterus to ovaries • Not flexible • Has cilia that push the egg down Function: • During ovulation, ovary releases egg into fallopian tube next to it • Egg usually fertilizes here • Continues to travel down the tubes into the uterus

  6. Ovaries Structure/Location: • Located in the left and right lower abdomen Function: • Produce eggs as well as hormones (estrogen and progesterone)

  7. Questions Label this diagram: One word responses: (i.) Which part of the female reproductive system seals during pregnancy to keep the amniotic fluids in? (ii.) Which part is responsible for the production of eggs and hormones? (iii.) Where do the eggs usually fertilize?

  8. Answers (i.) Seals to keep amniotic fluids in:Cervix (ii.) Produces eggs and hormones:Ovaries (iii.) Where eggs usually fertilize:Fallopian Tubes
