  1. Parallelism Handout

  2. Who can give the definition of parallelism? • Who can give an example of parallelism? Now, let’s look at the parallelism handout (your homework!) from last class:

  3. Parallelism • Repetition of key words or phrases • ORKeeping the same structure throughout different sentences or paragraphs • Examples: • "When you are right you cannot be too radical; when you are wrong, you cannot be too conservative."(Martin Luther King, Jr.) • "New roads; new ruts."(G. K. Chesterton)

  4. Examples • He likes to talk, eating candy, and going to soccer games. • What is wrong? • The verbs aren’t in parallel structure. This makes the sentence awkward. • He likes to talk, eat candy, and go to soccer games. • OR • He likes talking, eating candy, and going to soccer games. • Now it’s parallel because the verbs are all in the same structure.

  5. Examples • Tom plays the piano. The violin is Gina’s instrument. • What is wrong? • The sentences aren’t parallel. • Tom plays the piano. Gina plays the violin. • Apples are good for you and oranges are too. • What is wrong? • The words aren’t parallel. • Apples are as good for you as oranges.

  6. Possible response 1. John is being rewarded because of his attention to detail, his concern for the appearance of his room, his repeated efforts to improve the environment, and his sense of responsibility.

  7. Possible response 2. The students in Tain’anmen Square were seeking human freedoms. They wanted to establish a democratic government. They wanted to have freedom of expression. They wanted to improve the way of life for the Chinese people. They died in their efforts.

  8. Possible response 3. Regents’ Examinations are stolen in New York. Proxy students sit for SAT examinations in New Jersey. A senior who failed calculus hangs himself in California. A biology professor plagiarizes documents in Massachusetts. The pressures to succeed in education today lead many to unethical behavior.

  9. Possible response 4. The valedictorian of our class is a most accomplished and versatile young woman. These are some of her accomplishments: member of the National Honor Society, president of the class, editor of the yearbook, role in the school play, the forward on the varsity basketball team, a member of the State Championship volleyball team, and a grade point average of 4.0.

  10. P. 97 “The Declaration of Independence” Tell which appeals (ethos, pathos, logos) Jefferson uses. Explain your reasoning and find examples to support your point. Find and explain examples of parallelism (what makes them parallel?). Find at least three other rhetorical devices Jefferson uses. Find examples of the devices. How do they add to the persuasiveness of the text? Remember that when you write down a direct quotation, put quotation marks around the author’s words and then list the page number in parentheses at the end of the sentence. Also, you must introduce your quote and explain the significance of it! For example: When Jefferson states, “He has endeavored to prevent the population of these states,” he shows that the king has … (99).
