  4. 1st Workshop on accelertor physics in Germany / Frankfurt 2008 • The idea for a committee for Accelerator Physics was already present before the workshop in Frankfurt 2008 • What are the activities in accelerators physics and technology in Germany? What / where are existing competences? • What are collaborations between universities and institutes? What are the areas for collaboration? How can university groups contribute to existing and future projects? How to encourage and strengthen such collaboration? • What projects can be proposed for funding from BMBF (Ministery of Education and Research) until end 2008? For what projects in the future? • What projects could be done together with hadron & nuclear physics (KHuK) and with elementary particle physics (KET)? Roscoff October 2013

  5. From the idea to the KfB committee • At a 2nd workshop in October 2009 in Hamburg an "ad hoc committee" was formed to prepare a "Committee for Accelerator Physics", to promote the interests of accelerator physics in Germany and to improve information exchangs among the accelerator physicists and engineers. • The ad hoc committee developped a constitution and prepared a web site: www.beschleunigerphysik.de • The election took place in November 2010 • At the election, about 265 members were involved • The first meeting of the committee was held in January 2011 Roscoff October 2013

  6. KfB Commitee 12 elected Members for a period of three years: • Five from universities; • Fivefrom Helmholtz-Centres (Helmholtz-Association of German Research Centres): DESY, GSI, FZJ (Juelich), KIT (Karlsruhe), HZDR (Dresden Rossendorf), HZB (Berlin); • One from other German Research Centres; • One from Research Centres outside Germany, with Germany support to its operation; Invited to the meeting: • Onemember of the Committee of Fundamental Particle Physics; • Onemember of the Committee for Synchrotron Radiation; • Onemember of the Committee for Hadron & Nuclear Physics; • Onefrom each: BMBF, Project Organisers and the DPG (German Physics Society) Roscoff October 2013

  7. German Committees for Accelerator Physics –todays members- Oliver Boine-Frankenheim Rüdiger Schmidt Reinhard Brinkmann Jörg Roßbach Hans Weise Andreas Jankowiak Anke-Susanne Müller Shaukat Khan Wolfgang Hillert Thomas Weiland Florian Grüner Roscoff October 2013

  8. Registered members Status 01.03.2013 372 registered (46 female = 12%) ~ 47% from Helmholtz-Centres ~ 45% from Universities ~ 7% from internationale organisations (21) (CERN) ~ 1% from other nationale institutes (4) (2 x HIT + 2 x MPG ) New elections autumn 2013!

  9. Who can becom member? • The "Committee for Accelerator Physics" (KfB) represents the “Community of the German Accelerator Physicists and Engineers” and promotes contacts within the community. • The "Community of the German Accelerator Physicists and Engineers” includes: • Scientists who completed their studies of higher education with a bachelor, master and doctoral degree • Work at an academic institution in the Federal Republic of Germany or at an international organization with German financial participation (e.g. CERN, ESRF, ESS to come) • Carry out research, development, teaching, or have a leadership role in the field of accelerator physics Roscoff October 2013

  10. Some tasks of the commitee… • Exchange of information and coordination of interests between universities, national research centers and other academic institutions as well as industry • Identification of research priorities • Participate in the development of strategies for the future of accelerator physics in Germany and in international bodies with German participation (CERN, ESRF, ESS, …) • Community representation in national and international bodies • Strengthening of German participation in international projects and facilities of physics • Promote the teaching of young scientists and the perception of accelerator physics as a branch in physics • Encouraging contact with other research areas where accelerators are used (e.g. particle physics, materials science, medicine) or used by accelerator physics (e.g. electrical engineering, laser physics, …) • Suggestions to conferences, workshops, and participation in the annual meetings of the German Physics Society (DPG) Roscoff October 2013

  11. German Physics Society (DPG) – 62000 membersAccelerator physics to become a division (Sektion / Fachverband) / working group (Arbeitskreis) • DPG proposes to create a working group, not in favor of a “Fachverband” • Constitution being written… 2500 1900 3844 KfB Roscoff October 2013

  12. Meeting of the German Physics Society (DPG), with >1000 participants • Particle Physics • Hadrons & Nuclei • 150 contributions on accelerators in 15 sessions In particular, relevant for students to show their work Roscoff October 2013

  13. Funding of accelerator R&D in Germany Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft Deutscher Forschungszentren (Helmholtz-Association of German Research Centres) • 18 independen research centres, 34.000 staff, budget about 3 ×109 Euro/year, from particle physics to medicine • Among them are DESY, GSI, FZJ, KIT, HZDR, HZB • ARD initiative (Accelerator Research & Development) with funding of 4-5 MEuro / year • Funding in general for R&D projects in Helmholz research labs(..the labs might funs university groups) Verbundforschungsförderung (“Integrated Research Funding”) by BMBF • Funding of projects related to large instruments in particle physics, hadrons & nuclear physics, condensed matter and astro & astro-particle physics • Funding goes in general to university groups • Some part of this funding for research on accelerators, about 4-5 MEuro / year Hermann von Helmholz Roscoff October 2013
