  2. What is Urinary Incontinence? • Urinary incontinence happens when the muscles in the bladder controlling the flow of urine contract or relax involuntarily. This results in either leaking or uncontrolled urination. • Urinary incontinence can vary from mild, occasional leaking to chronic uncontrolled urination. • The condition affects nearly One in Ten people over age Sixty Five.

  3. Causes of Urinary Incontinence • Weakened pelvic floor muscles • Overactive bladder muscles • Interstitial cystitis (chronic bladder inflammation) or other bladder conditions. • Particular drugs/medicines are also known to induce incontinence issues. • People suffering from bladder stones, urinary tract infections etc are also known to have incontinence issues. • Side effects from a prior surgery Incontinence itself is not a disease, however it are often an indication of an underlying medical condition.

  4. Let’s take a look at the two of the most common types of urinary incontinence, Stress Incontinence and Urge Incontinence

  5. What is Stress Incontinence? • Stress incontinence happens when pressure is put on your bladder from physical activity like sneezing, coughing, exercising, heavy lifting. • Any pressure-increasing activity can trigger stress incontinence, particularly if your bladder is full. • Stress incontinence is caused when the muscles and tissues supporting the bladder, which is pelvic floor muscles, become weakened.

  6. What is Urge Incontinence? • Urge incontinence is when you get a sudden urge to pass urine. • Urge incontinence is a symptom of overactive bladder (OAB). • Urge incontinence is experienced, when bladder muscle is sending the message to the brain that the bladder is full when it actually isn’t. This causes the bladder to contract, giving the sensation that urine must be passed.

  7. How Can Urinary Incontinence Affect your Life? Ask yourself whether leaking urine or the fear of leaking urine has: • Stopped you from doing things outside of your home? • Caused you to be afraid to be too far from a bathroom or a change of clothes? • Stopped you from exercising or playing sports? • Made you uncomfortable with yourself and your body? If your answer yes to some of these questions, know that things can change for the better.

  8. Quick Remedial Options • Absorbent pads. They're disposable and designed for women and men. They also block odour and can be changed throughout the day. • Incontinence panties and briefs, an everyday underwear for women and men.
