Essential Question = What were the components of government in the Greek city-states of Athens and Sparta?

People = Read about how Sparta conquered a people called the Messenians on page 129. Then write a fact or two about how the Messenians became helots. In your facts, explain what the word “helot” means.
People = Read about Darius the Great and his son Xerxes on page 132. Then write two or more facts about these two leaders of Persia. Be sure to include the term Persian Wars and describe the actions of Darius and Xerxes.
Places = Read about Athens on page 128. Write at least 2 facts about Athens. Focus on government and education.
Places = Read about Sparta on pages 129 and 131. Write at least two facts about Sparta. Focus on their military (army) and daily life (such as food).
Events = Read about Pheidippides and his run from Marathon on page 132. Write a fact about what he did that helped Athens in their fight.
Events = Read about the battle of Thermopylae on page 132. This is what the movie “300” was based on. Write a fact about that battle.
Ideas = Read about Athens building a democracy on page 128. Write three facts that tell the story of the development of democracy. Start with what Draco did. Next, write a fact about Solon. Lastly, write a fact about Cleisthenes and his reforms.
Ideas = Read about the Olympic games on page 130. Write at least two facts about the Olympics. Consider looking at the “Skillbuilder” questions at the bottom to help you formulate your statements.
