  1. Objective: Analyze the effects of physical and human processes on the past and describe their impact on the present. How does history and physical geography explain patterns in Latin America today? Skill: Reading strategy to analyze expository text.

  2. Look at titles, pictures/visuals. What do you already know? Read/listen to the text. Record important people, dates, events. Re-read, question, make connections. Latin America- Mexico pp. 224-226 Central America pp. 244-246 Caribbean pp. 249-250 South America pp. 263-266

  3. Early Mexico- *diverse *primary economic activities *beans, corn, peppers and squash *milpa *Maya, Olmec, Toltec, Zapotec *Aztec- central and southern Mexico, Tenochtitlan

  4. The Colonial Period- *1519- Spanish conquistadores, alliances against Aztecs, Muskets and horses, diseases *New Spain, Mexico City over Aztec capital *Economy- gold and silver, agriculture, ejidos to haciendas “peasants” worked the large estates *Roman Catholic Missionaries: Christianity, Plazas around early churches *Most Mexicans are Roman Catholic, pre-Christian beliefs and holidays mixed with Christian beliefs (acculturation/assimilation??) *Early colonial period colonists were men= mestizos

Mexico Since Independence *1810-1821 revolt and independence from Spanish rule *What changed with independence? *1848 lost northern territory (Texas-California) *1910-1920 Mexican Revolution– What was the primary reason for this revolution? -economic inequality *Results: democracy-dictatorship; government involvement in economy (nationalized oil industry) *Land reform- what kind of land? Based on what system? 1992- right to sell land- what do you think this contributed to?
