    4. Business Challenges Key Message: Customers find multiple Web deployments expensive to buy, difficult to integrate, and time consuming to manage. Presenter Notes: Business Challenges Information Workers The increasing number and complexity of business resources makes it increasingly demanding for information workers to develop effective business insights. This is not a function of the amount of data or information – there has never been more of this – but, rather, focuses on the ability to use that information to really see what is going on in a business. Historically users have taken core business data, usually from database platforms, and extracted or linked this content into their own analysis tools, such as Excel. While this is effective for the individual, it is not efficient for the entire organization, because it leads to silos of information and potentially inconsistent conclusions. The raft of tools available to IWs can also be an issue, because each new tool can mean a period of reduced productivity during the training phase. They can also divide business users, with individual departments opting for different tools, which can exacerbate the whole silo issue. It also means that interdepartmental movement is affected, further reducing productivity. IT Management For IT departments the need to provide consistent information has always been a priority. The growth of the IW role has led to increased demand for access to information, but without the need to implement large scale roll-out and training of a raft of client or integration solutions, with the incumbent issues of patching and upgrades. IT needs to deliver effective tools that can be deployed quickly across an entire organization so that users can quickly and securely access common information for analysis. Organization For the entire company it is essential to identify strategic platforms and tools that can deliver the business vision and its component goals. The solutions have to be cost-effective, but must also enhance productivity, so that users can quickly deliver greater productivity. 7. What Excel Services 2007 wasn’t .... A spreadsheet creation tool No editing of spreadsheets in the browser Multi-user spreadsheet authoring Workbook loaded once in memory Each user had their own session (UI or WS-*) Other Considerations No Excel Object Model Extensibility not supported No VBA / Excel Macros…However, UDFs were supported Key Message In order to better understand Excel Services it is also necessary to describe what it is not. First, and most importantly, it is NOT simply the Excel client hosted on a server. Presenter Notes Excel Services is a new server technology designed from the ground-up to be scalable and robust. It is also not a spreadsheet-creation tool. Authoring spreadsheets requires the rich-client, Office Excel 2007. Users can, however, interact with spreadsheets through the Excel Services browser client, subject to the restrictions defined by the spreadsheet author or programmatically through the web services API. This model provides the ability on the part of the spreadsheet author to build the spreadsheet the way they want it and to restrict data consumers to only those interactions that the spreadsheet author chooses via the new browser-based access. Spreadsheet authors no longer have to use ad-hoc means of sharing spreadsheets such as e-Mail. Emailing spreadsheets often results in multiple copies of a spreadsheet, essentially creating “multiple versions of the truth” as well as exposing proprietary formulas and logic. Presenter Guidance Use this only if the audience has experience, and more importantly issues, with Excel Services in MOSS 2007.Key Message In order to better understand Excel Services it is also necessary to describe what it is not.
