  1. Littoral Environmental Sensing Architecture Dean Wakeham Jennifer Dussault

  2. Task 1: Identify critical METOC parameters for models and mission execution NSW Directorate FY07 METOC Sensing Requirements: • HYDROGRAPHY / BATHYMETRY: esp. shallow water • TIDES: current, height, times • CURRENTS: littoral, surf zone, open ocean, all depths • WAVES & SURF • BIOLUMINESCENCE • VISIBILITY: atmospheric • VISIBILITY: diver/combat swimmer • TEMPERATURE: ocean (including at depth) and atmospheric • LIGHT & ILLUMINATION: Natural (solar & lunar), Man-made • WINDS: Including aloft • ELECTRO-MAGNETIC/ ELECTRO-OPTICS PERFORMANCE • PRECIPITATION

  3. Task 2: Identify locations and classification levels for data assimilation • Locations: • MSC – NIPR/SIPR • NAVO WSC – ISO NMT – JWICS • FNMOC - Future

  4. Task 3: Identify capability gaps for data collection • Inventory NSW METOC sensors • Determine limitations of the sensors • Identify capability gaps

  5. Task 4: Evaluate and assess sensors for collecting necessary parameters

  6. Task 5: Identify communications paths and develop architecture for delivering data to appropriate locations Acoustic Modems: Benthos, WHOI, Other Satellite: Iridium, Immarsat Other: Cellular

  7. Task 6: Develop validation and assimilation techniques for provided data Validation: NCODA – Jim Cummings, NRL-Monterrey Assimilation: Delft3D – Larry Hsu (NRL-Stennis), Brian Chinn

  8. What’s Next: Inventory current NSW METOC sensors.CERTEX: deploy available NSW METOC sensors: wave buoy (SPAWAR), anchor? 4 ADCP’s (NAVO), mounts? UUV Delft3D forecasts for waves and currentsUse exercises such as CERTEX to develop and document tactics techniques and procedures for the employment of sensors and the delivery of data to required locations.Demonstrate end to end collection and assimilation of data in high resolution models (Delft3D).
